Phyllis Tirmenstein Obituary

Tirmenstein, Phyllis Ruth

91, passed away unexpectedly on February 4 at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, MO. She was born on May 17, 1930 in Valonia, Indiana, the daughter of the Rev. Arthur and Hilda (Baumann) Tirmenstein and was a resident of The Willows at Brooking Park.

Phyllis graduated from Reitz High School in Evansville, Indiana and Evansville College. She moved to the St. Louis area in 1967 where she worked with the St. Louis University School of Medicine Department of Pathology for 26 years. Phyllis retired as the department's business manager. She truly had a passion for life and a love of music. She was an accomplished orchestral musician and vocalist. She played in a number of symphonic orchestras during her lifetime. Her love of music led her to excel with a number of different musical instruments while still taking organ lessons until recently. Phyllis loved St. Louis, her Cardinals, and animals of all kinds. She particularly treasured her two cats and was a Silver Life Master Bridge player.

Phyllis was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church in Chesterfield and many other civic organizations with which she gave of herself for the benefit of others up until her final day with us. She received much recognition for her generosity and was committed to making her community better in any way that she could.

She was predeceased by her parents; siblings Adrienne M. Tirmenstein, A. Paul Tirmenstein, and Miriam G. Kahl as well as her dear friend Roland G. Quest. Phyllis is survived by brother-in-law Melvin R. Kahl of Jeffersonville, IN; nieces L. Kathleen Simonis of Jeffersonville, IN and Debra A. Tirmenstein of Frenchtown, MT and nephews Mark A. Tirmenstein of Newtown, PA and Steve Kahl (Nancy) of McDaniels, KY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater St. Louis Community Foundation, the Saint Louis Zoo, the Humane Society of Missouri, King of Kings Lutheran Church in Chesterfield, and Zion Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas. Arrangements are pending with services to be held at a later date. www.boppchapel.com

Gateway Festival Orchestra and the St. Louis Community has been so grateful for Phyllis' generosity. She cared so deeply about our community and has seen to it that the care will continue. I have thought of her often in this past year: A role model of joy and passion that we should all aspire to. We miss her presence but have her memory.

Phyllis was always dear friend, beautiful lady. Enjoyed our transportation rides as her driver. She introduced me to Ragdolls. Without her wouldn´t have my Ragdoll kitten! What a special unique cat he is! Thank you, Phyllis!

Phyllis was a visionary! She helped Gateway Festival Orchestra set up our first challenge grant. It opened the way to sustainability. She was generous, kind and always positive. Hopefully her legacy will have a lasting impact on the St. Louis area. She was a treasure in our community and will be missed.

Sweet, lovely, Phyllis. A friend to all, especially musicians - a generous soul who gave of her time and resources to an orchestra dear to me. A fellow cat lover, art lover, patron of so many organizations and individuals. I will be only one of many who will miss her dearly.
