It's hard to believe it's been eight years since Rex passed and more than forty years since we first met. The world is a lesser place for his absence.

It's hard to believe we're coming up on the five year anniversary of Rex's passing. He's still the smartest person I ever worked with and as fine an individual as I've ever met. He will always be missed.

Four years later and his loss is still remembered regularly by anyone with the good fortune to call him a friend. He will always be missed, for there just are not enough people of his caliber in this world.

It's been four years since we lost Rex, and each day is a reminder how he influenced so many of us
with his optimistic look on life. What we saw as challenges he saw as opportunity.

The members and colleagues of REX A. BERTRAM from the ST. LOUIS UNIVERSITY School of Law prayerfully remember him at his passing. His talent as a lawyer, and leadership initiatives for those with disabilities, will give him a permanent niche in the history of our law school.
May he rest in peace, and may all of you be consoled!

Rex was our family attorney for more than 25 years and more importantly a true friend. His legal advice was very good but, his personal thoughts and advice helped our family so many times.
Rex will be truly missed, he is an inspiration to us all as he made the most of every day and led by example.

I had the privilege of meeting and working with Rex for the first time in law school. I owe any success I enjoyed there to his mentoring. He was an inspiration to me intellectually and personally. Generous with his wit, time and knowlege I could not imagine having gone through that process without him. Rex was a one of a kind person. A rare combination of brilliance, common sense and kindness. In short, he was the finest person anyone could hope to call a friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. I am especially proud to say I was lucky enough to be one of those persons. My prayers and heartfelt thanks go out to his family for sharing him with me.

To everyone who was near to Rex.
I will miss Rex.
We named our grandson Alex Rex Polovina when was born, and Alex Rex Polovina was as a godson for Rex and Xhulia.
We are very lucky that his name will keep in our family for forever.

We are sorry for your loss. We lived across the street from your family and loved when Rex would be outdide to give us rides on his wheelchair. We had so much fun! Thanks for the memories!

I am, unfortunately, not gifted with words. And so I do not feel confident that I will be able to fully convey the type of person that was Rex and the influence that he had on my life. He was a gifted soul in so many ways. His list of friends and loved ones was countless. His intelligence was a constant source of astonishment to myself and others and his sense of humor constantly put me out of any bad mood I'd happen to find myself in. At an early age, he found himself in a situation that not many would ever have been able to overcome with their spirit intact; yet he had achieved more in his life than most "able-bodied" people. His life was not any easy one, he was frequently plagued with pain and illnesses and through it all he never lost his humor. He will forever have a lasting impact on my life. I will continuously look at him as an example of how to live life to the fullest and what can be achieved with the right mindset and the right spirit.
Love and best wishes to his family.

Julie, Mr. Bertram and all of Rex's family,
Our deepest condolences go out to all of you. Steve and I both worked in accounting at the Ramada Inn, prior to its name change to the Truman Hotel. I was working there when Rex and Chris Peper purchased the hotel, in 1986, I believe. Steve came on in 1992. We will forever be grateful to both Rex and Chris Peper for their kindness, vision, dedication and support. Some years were challenging for sure but with Rex's "voice of reasoning" as was mentioned and his knowledge and intuition, we perservered. He also had a quick wit that often would come out at the perfect time when the mood needed to be lightened up.
Rex was always kind yet "firm but fair" as the saying goes. More often than not any decision he made turned out to be spot on even though it might not have seemed to be at the time.
Although I left the hotel in 2005 and Steve left in 1998, we have often thought of Rex over the years and have been kept updated by friends and former coworkers. Rex was one of those rare owners who was deeply involved in the hotel on a daily basis...but in a healthy, desirable way. He guided us but trusted us to do our thing. That's a sign of a special boss. He will be missed.
