Richard Allen Farroll

Farroll, Richard Allen 81, of O'Fallon, MO with family at his side and Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church continued his journey in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 21, 2013. He was the beloved husband and best friend of 59 years to Joan Marie Farroll (nee Scheetner). Richard was the oldest of four children born to Harry W. Farroll & Emma V. Farroll (Kilbride). Dicky, as he was known in his youth, attended St. Edwards Catholic Grade School. Richard attended and graduated from McBride High School. Richard went to work with the St. Louis Post Dispatch as an office boy in 1949. In January of 1952 Richard answered the call of duty and joined the U.S. Navy. It was during this period of Richard's life that he met a young lady, Joan Marie Scheetner. It was love at first sight and Richard and Joan knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime match made in heaven. Richard and Joan were married on November 26, 1953 and were soon moving to Norfolk to start their new married lives together where Richard was stationed. During this time in Norfolk Richard and Joan learned that they would be parents for the first time and soon Catherine came into their lives. After dutifully serving his country for four years Richard was honorably discharged and the move back to their hometown of St. Louis was completed. Richard returned to the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1956 working in the Statistical Department. Richard and Joan soon learned that they would be expecting their second child, Robert. It was after the birth of their second child they knew they had outgrown the small apartment where they had been living in Jennings. After some house hunting they established their home in Glasgow Village and soon learned that their family was once again growing. Their third child, John, arrived on the scene and the Farroll family grew to five. Richard and Joan had their children attend school at St. Catherine of Alexandria and the family attended church there as well. After about 6 years of the Farroll family settling into their routines, Richard and Joan surprised everybody with the announcement that they were going to be having an addition to their family. Ann arrived on the scene and it was soon realized that the family had outgrown their home in Glasgow Village. The house hunt began and soon the family was moving to the Spanish Lake area. The family settled into life in the new community and they were members of Our Lady of Loretto's parish and school. During the next 29 years Richard and Joan watched their young family grow and move into their adult lives. It was also during this time that Richard completed his 47+-year career with the St. Louis Post Dispatch. During those many years Richard had worked his way up from a position as an office boy up to the Advertising Account Executive responsible for the Resort Area and Airline Advertising in the Midwest. Richard often spoke to family and friends about his years at the Post' and he would emphasize how he enjoyed his coworkers, his job and just loved going to work each and every day. After 29 years Richard and Joan saw the empty nest' and made the move to St. Charles, MO. After living in this home for four years they decided it was finally time to break ground and build' their first home. Their house was completed in O'Fallon, MO and they moved in and quickly made this new house into their home. Richard and Joan had many friends that they would get together with on a routine basis. These groups would include the St. Edward's Catholic Grade School 8th grade graduating class of 1945, the Spanish Lake Tuesday group and the Panera Bread coffee group in Hawk Ridge, Lake St. Louis. Richard and Joan are members of Immaculate Conception of Dardenne Prairie. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Joan Marie Farroll, his children, Catherine Marie Farroll, Robert Allen (Cathleen) Farroll, John Edward (Kathy) Farroll and Ann Marie (Jim) Gilman. Richard also leaves behind his brothers and sister; Harold Farroll, Patricia (Glenn) Schultheis and Jack (Jane) Farroll and his brother-in-law Frank (Fran) Scheetner. Richard's life was enriched by his many grandchildren; Erin, Shanna, Jennifer, Shaun, Katie, Jamie, Gillian, Morgan, Zachary and Rachel and his five great-grandchildren Will, Graham, Ashlie, Bryson and Jase. The family expresses their sincere gratitude to St. Luke's Hospice Service and Angels on Duty for the home care and consideration they provided during his final days here on earth. Services: There will be a celebration of Richard's life with a memorial mass Saturday, Jan. 26 at 12:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church of Dardenne, 7701 Highway N, Dardenne Prairie, MO. The family will receive friends for a brief period in the church's vestibule prior to the mass and enjoy a luncheon following the mass in the parish hall. Interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery will be a private service.
