It is with deep sadness, that the family of Susan Carmichael Thomson announce her passing on June 8th at the age of 86 in St. Louis. Sue was born and grew up in Schenectady, New York, the only child of Dorothy and Duncan Carmichael. While she lost her father at the age of 16, she was always surrounded by family, becoming particularly close with her cousin Nancy and enjoying being spoiled by her Uncle Malcolm. After graduating high school, she attended the State University of New York at Albany, where she earned her bachelor's degree.

It is there where she met Robert (Bob) Thomson, whom she eventually married in 1959. Bob and Sue moved to Milwaukee, where Sue started her newspaper career as a copywriter at Schuster's Department Store. While in Milwaukee, she earned her Master's in English from the University of Wisconsin. After a few years in Milwaukee, they moved to and settled in Clayton in 1973 at which time Sue joined the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, where she worked for over 30 years. She held numerous positions at the paper, including becoming the first woman to serve as the paper's business editor. It was during this time that she earned an MBA from St. Louis University.

Sue loved her dogs (Sadie, Violet and Homer) and had a passion for music, traveling and photography, which she pursued with vigor after her retirement in 2005. If she valued you as a friend, she never let go and was well admired beyond her colleagues at the Post-Dispatch - you always knew where you stood with her.

Her husband, Bob, passed away in 1999 and she never remarried. She is survived by two sons Bruce (wife Christine, children Duncan and Audrey), who lives in Perth, Australia and John (wife Yvonne, children Jordan, Caroline and George), who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.

A service will be held on Friday, June 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Michael and St. George at 6345 Wydown Boulevard in Clayton.
