William Camarata Obituary

Camarata, William Joseph

June 17, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Joseph Camarata. Bill was surrounded by the love of his family as he departed this world on June 17, 2025, at the age of 85. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Ruth Lougeay and Joseph Camarata, and brother, James. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Marilyn (nee Suliber), whose steadfast partnership exemplified a lifetime of love and commitment. Together, they built a family rooted in care and connection, raising their children, Joseph (Beth Ann) Camarata and Suzy Camarata, who will forever hold his wisdom and humor close to their hearts. His grandchildren Dominic (Anna) Hewitt, Monica (William) Severns, Olivia Hewitt, and Maria Hewitt were a constant source of his pride and joy. He could always be seen on the sidelines at any activity where the grandkids were involved. In addition, his four great-grandchildren filled his days with light and laughter.

As a retired UPS executive, Bill exemplified hard work and excellence, always ready to lend a guiding word on how to deliver exceptional service. His wisdom, humor, and generosity of spirit touched all who knew him. Bill, alongside his wife Marilyn, made an indelible mark on the St. Louis music scene by founding the iconic Off Broadway Nightclub. From 1984 to 2001, Bill was affectionately known as "The Face at the Door" greeting countless patrons with a smile and friendly banter. Music was a passion that flowed through his life, resonating in the many friendships he cultivated. Bill's love for cars matched his love for music, connecting with people, always eager to share a story, a laugh, or advice.

Bill made the compassionate decision to donate his body to Washington University Medical School. Through this selfless act, Bill will contribute to the advancement of medical education and research, leaving a lasting impact on future generations of healthcare professionals. Our family takes comfort in knowing that Bill's legacy will continue to inspire and support the scientific community. In honor of Bill's generosity, our family encourages those interested in body donation to explore opportunities with Washington University Medical School. To learn more, please visit https://bodydonorprogram.wustl.edu/ or contact the school directly.

We imagine him now, sharing a cold beer with beloved family and friends who have gone before him, surrounded by joy, laughter, and the warmth of reunion. Please join us in remembering Bill for the love he shared, the laughter he sparked, and the countless lives he enriched. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

We always enjoyed the conversations at Monica's sports games. We frequently reminisce about the days when our children were little. Many blessings to the family!

I met Mr. Camarata in the 1960s. I was a college student working part-time at United Parcel Service (UPS). I refer to him as Mister because he was one of my supervisors at that time. He was a very good manager. He was one of the reasons that I enjoyed my time at UPS. I was glad to read in his obituary that he rose to the ranks of an executive at UPS. I also met his brother-in-law while working at UPS. I extend my condolences to the Camarata and Suliber families. Frank LoRusso

Deepest sympathies to Joe and all the family. Bill was a real game changer when it came to the StL music scene-a lot of us owe him a great deal for providing a venue where you were free to pursue your passion.

We are forever grateful to Bill and the Camarata family for the decade of great music and fun at the Off Broadway venue. It was never the same after it was sold but we hold the best memories we've had to date because of Bill and Joe! Thank you! Rest in Peace!
