The Trapani Files -- March 1977 ... Tony loved the Bay because Tony was the Bay. More than forty-five years later, I remember a Friday afternoon so well that proved it true.
St. Stanislaus had emptied with its usual weekend rush to the busses for boarding students going home as the campus slowed to a lovely crawl. A veritable prince of the city of Bay St. Louis from an early age, Tony, a day student, was still on campus -- Tony, the easiest guy to find, was always on campus.
Tony asked me if I wanted to go sit on the long pier in front of the school -- the pier that had replaced the grand one destroyed in Hurricane Camille. We walked across the highway, onto the pier and made our way to its end to have a seat, our feet hanging over the Bay's calm waters that day. It was so nice and chill, just hanging with Tony an hour before sunset. That friendly connection of school pals relaxing over the Bay seemed so automatic looking back on it. The conversation? Well, it was everything from side-splitting laughs to pauses of pure peace. He was at home with that magnificent body of water and made everyone feel at home too.
The Bay was -- and remains -- Tony's.
I couldn't put that into such sentiment then as a seventh grader, just as I'm realizing now that sometimes -- even if but for a moment -- we are closer than we think. Years and distance have passed and passed, but memories of Tony come back as I learn of his passing.
He was just the nicest, funniest, coolest, most astute guy, and his greatness was in the works all along. We're talking about a rare breed of individual who will never be forgotten.
One day, hopefully, a statue of him will overlook the Bay -- the Bay of Trapani.
Next in the Trapani Files -- A day at the Tracks (the railroad tracks by the school) when Tony and friends made the birds fly.
In lasting remembrance of The Great Trapani,

Tony was a classmate at St. Stanislaus and he was a class act then -- a caring heart, a wildly happy disposition and a rollicking sense of humor.
For his community, he would become a true pillar and legend. For anyone crossing his path, he was always and quickly a better part of their day. For classmates and friends back in the day, he was a guaranteed smile, that smile from the heart that was just so Tony. For me, as I learn of his passing five months since and thousands of miles away, he remains a beacon of love, hope and respect. He leaves us an imperative to live the best life possible, just as he will be so sorely missed. A straight-up character of an American original and a stand-up guy of exemplary character as a man, there will forever be only one Tony Trapani. Only one - the one and only Tony Trapani.
With profound sadness,

I worked with Cary. My momma & I loved going to Trapani's before Katrina, the fried green tomatoes with crab!! The sunset martinis!! His driftwood art!! Just an amazing guy!! Momma left this world not long after Katrina, she hated seeing her beloved Coast torn up. I only got to go yo Trapani's once a few years ago. It was hard to be there, but their hospitality was the same & Tony was still the same great guy. My condolences to Cary, Tony's children & the rest of the family for the loss of such a great guy.
