Henry Anthony Maggio, M.D.

Bay St. Louis, MS

Dr. Henry Anthony Maggio, age 82, passed away at his home in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi attended by his devoted wife on Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

He was born on November 20, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Biaggio Joseph Maggio and Bertha (Petrie) Maggio.

Henry's love of learning began early and continued throughout his lifetime. He attended Berhman High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, from which he graduated in 1953. Henry went on to graduate with honors from the Loyola School of Pharmacy in 1957, which he attended on a music scholarship. During this time he played the French horn with the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony. He then attended Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine and is a member of the Class of 1961.While in medical school Henry married the love of his life Bobbye Padgett Maggio on July 30, 1960. In 1961, Henry, Bobbye and their first born son moved to San Antonio Texas where he accepted an internship at Brook Army Hospital. Following his internship he served in the US Army as a medical officer with the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood Texas. Having completed his service to his country Henry and Bobbye and their now three children moved to the Bay-Waveland area where he practiced family medicine for five years. After Hurricane Camille, he returned to LSU Medical School for a 3 year Residency in Psychiatry and Neurology. During this time Henry and Bobbye were blessed with their fourth child. Henry began a private practice of general psychiatry in Gulfport, Mississippi which he continued until he retired in 2005. He also served on the staff of Gulfport Memorial Hospital for thirty years. He was Board Certified in General Psychiatry and Neurology as well as Forensic Psychiatry, was a member of the American Psychiatric Association and served on the State Board of Mental Health for six years. He truly loved the practice of medicine and the art of helping people through out his life.

He felt that his calling was to help people pursue both mental and spiritual health.

Henry served the dioceses of Biloxi as a member of the diaconate evaluation committee for eight years. As an active member of Our Lady of the Gulf, Henry was a part of the team that helped establish perpetual adoration in the parish. He was a faithful 2 a.m. on Tuesday adorer for years. Another joy for him was opening his home to lead men in a weekly prayer and scripture study group.

A beloved and respected father to his children, a faithful and beloved husband, and a cherished grandfather to sixteen who knew him as "PapaDoc", Henry loved gardening and anything he planted lived and flourished. He taught himself woodworking and made any number of keepsakes for friends and children. His other great passion was LSU sports.

During his eight year battle with Dementia he was attended by his family and Mr. Willard (Willy) Keys, a faithful caregiver like non-other. The last years of Henry's life Southern Care Hospice came along side the family, his nurses Ashley, Liz, and Tiffany took wonderful care of him.

So dear one, Doctor, husband, father go rest high on the mountain your work on earth is done we will see you soon just inside the eastern gate over there.

Dr. Maggio was preceded in death by his parents, Biaggio "B.J." & Bertha Petrie Maggio: two sisters, Kathleen Maggio Rabalais & Teresa Maggio Hebert and brother-in-law Paul Hebert.

Bobbye, we have just found Henry's obituary and are so sorry to hear of your loss. Henry's accomplishments are amazing in many areas that we never knew about. Without Virginia to keep us informed about Bay Louis news, we have lost our connection and really miss it. Wishing you God's blessings, Travis and Sue Hensley

Our condolences on the passing of Henry Maggio. My mother and I have been working on a family tree on and off for several years. I recently expanded our family tree to my mom's maternal side, the Pitre family. My mother(still living) remembers Henry as a young man. I just learned of his passing today as I was updating my family tree.

Henry's mother, Bertha, was the son of Julien Pitre. Julien was the brother of my mom's grandmother Cleona Pitre. Julien's wife, Camille Use was the brother of my mom's grandfather Albert Usey.(a brother and sister Pitre married a brother and sister Usey.)

What're an awesome man. Always kind. He also was a good friend in high school to my late father, Roy Hingle. They were band mates and Mr Maggio even stood in my parents wedding in 1956. How blessed he is to now walk with Jesus. Thank you. Kathleen Hughes.

I was a patient of Dr. Maggio's many years ago. His strong christian faith and kindness walked me through a hard time of post-partum depression. I had been afraid to have a second child because of the depression, he told me, "We got through this the first time and we can do this again if we have to, this time you know you will be ok." Two months later I was pregnant and never had any depression. My son is 30 years old and my daughter is now 26. Thank God for this man! I will truly miss him. Sincerely, Kappy Page Stephens

I WAS A PATIENT OF DR. MAGGIO FOR SOME TIME AND I DREADED THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM BEFORE HE RETIRED.THAT WAS RIGHT BEFORE KITRINA.SINCE THAT TIME WHEN LIFE THROSE A CURVE BALL, I CAN STILL HEAR HIS WORDS OF WISDOM. MY HUSBAND LAUGHINGLY WOULD SAY...."I SPELL RELIEF AS MAGGIO.
HE TALKED SO LOVEINGLY ABOAUT HIS FAMILY, AND MOSTLY HIS WIFE. HE SAID, "SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE
IN THE SAME ROOM WITH ME, IT JUST FEELS GOOD TO
KNOW THAT SHE'S IN THE HOME."
GOD BE WITH THE FAMILY DURING THIS TIME.

Henry, one of the Lord's 'special children'. With his medical wisdom and talent he blessed many. Best of all, his life being led by the Holy Spirit he with wife, Bobby, brought many into the knowledge and blessings of Jesus.
