Albert Mazza Obituary

Mazza, Albert "Babe", age 86, of Colonial Woods Drive, Mount Vernon, OH passed away on Friday September 12, 2008 at his home. He was born on February 6, 1922 in Clarksburg, West Virginia to the late Samual and Rosa (Belloti) Mazza. A proud West Virginian, Babe graduated from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, West Virginia and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He received his Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Education from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Babe taught, coached basketball and served as Athletic Director over his 35 year career that began at Ceredo-Kenova High School in West Virginia (1948-57), South Pointe High School in Ohio (1957-59) and Northeast High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (1960-83). While attending Marshall University Babe played on the basketball team and is still a member of the Marshall M Club, a club for all past Marshall University athletes. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. In retirement, Babe was an avid fisherman, golfer, harness racing fan, "gentleman" farmer and sports enthusiast. Babe personally mentored and influenced thousands of students and athletes in his 35 years of teaching and coaching. He will be sadly missed by many lifelong friends and was known as a true gentleman on and off the court. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Margaret (Byrne) Mazza; a son, John (Barbara) Mazza of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter, Cathy (Bob) Berkowitz of Miami, Florida; two grandchildren, Matt and Annie Berkowitz; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his feline companion Molly. Beside his parents, Babe was preceded in death by five brothers: Joseph Mazza, John Mazza, Anthony Mazza, Angelo "Hank" Mazza, Frank Mazza, and two sisters, Flora Iaquinta and Anna Julian. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM. Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Ohio. To the Mazza Family,

As a 68' NE graduate and player for Coach Mazza I would like to express my sympathies at what I know is a difficult time.

This past weekend, while at our 40th reunion, the word circulated that the Coach had passed. This brought back memories for those in attendance who had the opportunity to play for him. I would echo what Park mentioned in an earlier entry, that basketball wasn't the only thing the Coach would teach....there were life experences and those "special" phrases also. I'm sure the other members of the 68' team in attendance ( Larry, Dennis, Jeff, Ben, and Stan ) would agree.

As a jock, Coach has a special meaning.

Coach Mazza was special!

He will be remembered.

To The Mazza Family,

As a MU graduate, I was probably just one of many who was pulled under the wing of the "Master", also known as Babe, and counselled for many hours in the little, no, tiny AD's office just off the NE gym. Of course this always turned into a time to sit and listen to the stories about Marshall's legendary coach,Cam Henderson, and how to play and coach basketball. But, other "man topics" came up, too.

John Mazza was a student and BB player at Deerfield Beach where I taught my first year in Broward County before I transferred to NE. Of course I attended many NE sporting events, since I lived with Dave Severns, who coached football for the NE Hurricanes. That is when I first met Babe, and just imagine, at a high school sports event.

The first teachers' meeting at NE, my second year, was like walking into an alumni meeting of Marshall U. Seemed like everyone was from WV. Of course, Babe and John Wellman were in the back holding court for all that would listen and be willing to laugh regardless of the speaker's insight on how to get started on another great school year.

He was surely missed by all of us who were left in FL when the Mazza's moved from Margate to the Ohio farm....I am truely sorry that I only got to see him once or twice after that....

He was one of a kind that I know lived a full life and will be talked about over many beers in the future. I can't wait to see other mutual friends and hear their favorite Babe stories...

I am sorry that I will not be able to join you to celebrate his life....

Margaret and family:
We are so sorry to learn about Babe's passing. Daryl was honored to have been a basketball player under Coach Mazza's watchful eye for 4 years. He was a tough coach who was respected by both his team and the students at Northeast High School. I was privileged to have attended nursing school at Broward Junior Community College with you (you may not remember me, Margaret) and I got to know you and Coach Mazza better during that time. Daryl and I wish to extend our sincerest sympathies to you and your family during this most difficult time. May God wrap His arms around you and comfort you in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Judy (Rector) and Daryl Neve

John, So sorry to hear about your father. I was at my High School reunion just a couple of weeks ago and was talking to David Turner and I asked how you and your father were doing. Your father was an exceptional man and I wish you and your family the best in these trying times. God will bless him.
Sincerely,
Peter and Michele Horn
