Edward Resnick Obituary

Resnick, Edward S., 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Miami Beach on August 14, 2003. He is survived by his adored and adoring wife of 53 years, Phyllis, beloved daughter Patricia and cherished grandchildren, Alexandra and Connor, much loved daughter-in-law, Gail, and her three children, Andreas, Nick and Annika, extremely close and dearly loved sister-in-law, Lillian, brother-in-law, Spencer, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces, Jordan, Marla, Larry, Marie, Alex, Eric, Brian, Nicole, Keeley, Diana, Max, Elizabeth, Mia and Nicky. Edward was born on February 23, 1926 in New Haven, CT. He moved to Miami Beach in 1936 at the age of 10 and graduated from Miami Beach Senior High. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he graduated from the University of Florida with B.A. and J.D. degrees, both of which were received with highest honors. Upon graduation in 1950, he became a member of the American and Florida Bar Associations. Edward began his legal career at the firm of Broad and Cassel, later joining the firm of Courshon and Courshon. Edward and Phyllis were married in 1950 in New York City. In 1954, Edward contracted polio and remained a quadriplegic and full time wheelchair user. Overcoming this obstacle with his signature intelligence, style, strength and grace, in 1956 Edward opened a law office on Lincoln Road as a sole practitioner. He joined the firm of Abrams, Anton, Robbins, Resnick and Schneider in Hollywood, FL as a senior partner in 1964. Edward became known as the father of condominium law in the southeast. His successful law practice specialized in condominium, real estate and banking law until his retirement in 1982. Edward's retirement was marked by enormous and energetic activity dedicated to the public good. He remained a non-practicing, but active member of the Florida Bar. During this period, he spent many years as either a member or chairman of several advisory committees for the City of Miami Beach and Miami Dade County. Specifically, he served as a member of the Committee on Disability Issues (CODI) for Miami Dade County and Chairman of both the South Pointe Advisory Board and the Barrier Free Environment Committee for the City of Miami Beach. He served as vice president and president of the Board of Directors of the South Pointe Towers Condominium Association for a total of nine years. In 1998, together with his wife Phyllis, he founded a not-for-profit Florida corporation, "Access Now, Inc.", which is dedicated to bringing about as much accessibility as possible to as many members of the disabled community as possible. Using his legal expertise and passion, he gave his time voluntarily on virtually a full-time basis. Access Now has grown to a nationwide organization and all those who have been involved in it under the leadership of Edward are extremely proud of its many important accomplishments. Edward and Phyllis have been long time members of Temple Beth Sholom, as well as avid supporters of the performing and cultural arts. They were seen frequently at many varied events around the community. Edward will be remembered, admired and loved by those whose lives he touched. His spirit soared, his reach was grand. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to "Access Now, Inc.", 400 South Pointe Drive, #1004, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 17, in New York city at Parkside Memorial, 98-60 Queens Blvd., Forest Hills at 12 noon. A future memorial service will be held in Miami Beach at a date to be announced.

Dear Phyllis,

I’m sorry that I did not have an opportunity to give you a big warm hug at Edward’s beautiful Memorial Service on Sunday.

Elliott and I have long had tremendous respect for both of you. We loved to see you at all the plays, concerts, ballets etc. We loved the fact that you never stopped doing all the things you loved to do! Your establishing Access Now was a tremendous undertaking, and the fact that you were so successful in that endeavor (and will continue to be, I’m sure) was always an inspiration to us.

As all the Eulogists spoke, I knew that I had to write this note to you. Although we knew that your efforts had helped innumerable people with disabilities, I had a new understanding, and saw some of the faces of those you helped. Few people can leave a legacy such as that. Be very proud of all of your accomplishments, and enjoy your new life in Aventura.

Take care of yourself, Phyllis. Continue to receive much joy from Pat and your beautiful grandchildren. We will look forward to seeing you again at all the plays, concerts, ballets etc.

Fondly,

Arlene and Elliott Harris

His personal effects to create a better lifestyle for persons with disabilities; was a important reason How and Why I have learned to work to make the dream of making Florida businesses understand and respect the needs of the disabled. Thank you, Phyllis for being a good friend. I promise to continue my efforts and hope that others learn to respect their rights under the federal and state ADA laws. I will miss him.

Dear Phyllis and Pat,

Eddie...Eddie...he's a part of my life. I hear him calling from the bedroom on Cleveland Ave...cursing loudly...having fun cursing loudly... I see him in the pool, we're swimming around and you all are chatting...and now to the latest time, in your place at South Point, in the bedroom with all of us around, my girls, too, and he telling you, Phyllis, not to say something because there were two little "Thalias" there, and then on our last trip to see you, talking to my girls...you don't know how much that meant to me.

He's in my heart forever.

I love you

Dear Mrs. Resnick,

It is with great sadness that I write this note to you. I remember Mr. Resnick very fondly. Early in the mornings when he left for work, he was always very friendly and excited to start his day. As a young man I learned a great deal from him. His disability was transparent, he was always passionate about his work and life. He was a very positive man , and had time to reflect on questions I asked.

I truly believe that his work ethic, his character, and his concern for others, left a positive impact on me.

I will always have wonderful memory of Mr. Resnick, he truly left his mark in the world!

Dearest Phyllis and Pat,

I suppose you know the feeling of your heart descending like a fast elevator to below your stomach ... it was like that when Laura called to tell me the news of Eddie's Passing.

I've been remembering the pinches, the piling of purses and shopping paraphanelia on his lap, being warned away from playing on his bars in the deep end as he walked in the pool, having breakfast as he helped himself to something. I hear him calling "Patricia" to get your attention ... his quick wit and playful nature drew me to him.

May He rest in peace ... may You continue gracefully to fill your lives. Much love to You.

Dear Phyllis

I was extremely sorry to hear about Ed. He was a gentleman and a fine person. The two of you have done a great deal to make our community more accessible and, while I am sure you have ruffled a few feathers doing so, you have also made a lot of friends. I consider myself to be one of those friends. We worked shoulder to shoulder from the start to tell designers that we wanted the Performing Arts Center to be welcoming to people with disabilities and advising them on how to do that. We worked together to get language in the building code requiring restaurants to add accessible restroom facilities when they add additional seating even outdoors. Ed served on the Commission on Disability Issues which we provide staff support for. And we sat across the table negotiating settlements on a couple of your lawsuits. Through it all, our friendship has grown, and I have a lot of respect for the things the two of you have accomplished together. You have my full sympathy for the deep sorrow you must be feeling. On a much different level, I share that sorrow. I hope that you will have the strength to carry on the work that you and Ed have done so well over the years.

Dear Phyllis and Patricia,

I loved Eddie like a favorite uncle and feel so lucky to have known him. I loved his legendary irreverence, but I also will always remember how deeply touched I was by his reverent witnessing at my wedding, very much in the spirit of my father who loved him so.

Dear Phyllis and Family,

Cynthia and I were deeply saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I am sure you know that he and I worked together many years ago when he handled our legal work for the condominiums we were building in the Miami and Hallandale areas. He was a great lawyer, a good friend to me, and his outlook on life was overwhelming. He was a real jewel and will be missed by so many, for he was a one-in-a-lifetime person. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family in this time of sadness.
