Erwin Vasquez Obituary

Vasquez, M.D., Erwin, 64, passed away after a long illness, with his family by his side on Thursday, September 2. He was born in Margarita Island, Venezuela, and came to the U.S. in 1970 where he began his medical practice. As an immigrant to America, he overcame many obstacles including learning and practicing medicine in a new language, and overcoming cultural bias and misunderstandings. As a result, he quickly recognized a disparity in healthcare in the community. Through hard work and determination, in the early 1990s, he became the Chief of Staff at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale. He also built a cardiology and internal medicine practice as a sole practitioner, and he was on staff at five Broward County hospitals. In 1989, Doctor "V," as he was lovingly known, created the Light of the World Clinic, a free medical facility for the indigent in Broward County providing services to more than 12,000 people a year with a cadre of dozens of volunteer physicians. The clinic relies on small grants and donations to keep its doors open 6 days a week. Ever eager to spread the word, he created a learning center at the clinic where hundreds of medical students from five colleges and universities could learn cultural competency. Dr. Vasquez taught as an adjunct professor on Ethnicity in Healthcare at Nova Southeastern University, and he created a scholarship program in his name for minority students entering the field of medicine at FAU. Dr. Vasquez, a deeply devout Roman Catholic, was a voice for those who had none, and an advocate for the poor, under-served and elderly. He created The Erwin and Elaine Vasquez Family Foundation at the Broward Community Foundation. It focuses upon quality-of-life issues in the aging population with more than $100,000 yearly in donations to numerous agencies serving the elderly. His beloved wife, Elaine, was his partner in all their community endeavors. They included the creation of Viva Broward, a Hispanic Heritage Celebration, and the publication of El Heraldo de Broward, the first Spanish newspaper in Broward County, a multicultural marketing company, and numerous charity events that raised millions for non-profits. He held numerous Board positions: Chairman of the American Red Cross, Foundation Board Member at FAU, Appointee by Gov. Jeb Bush to the Governors' Mansion Foundation, Sister Cities International, Symphony of the Americas, Museum of Discovery & Science, and numerous medical boards. "This was a man of faith, charity and hope for those with no voice," said Elaine. "He believed that you gave until it hurt, and you never asked for anything in return because true giving, is one way." The recognition he received throughout his life was humbling to him; however, he accepted the recognition to serve as an example to those who say they "do not have time." His awards include The Point of Light Award, The Jackie Onassis Award for Public Service in Washington, DC; The Miami Herald's Spirit of Excellence Award, the First American Award, The City of Hope Humanitarian of the Year, and St. Luke's Award as Doctor of the Year, to name a few. Dr. Vasquez held the position of High Commander with The Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, and Pope John recognized him for his unending philanthropy and concern for the poor. Family was the core of who he was as a man, and he leaves behind his wife, Elaine, stepdaughters Kim, Kristen and Lisa, grandchildren Ashlyn, Skyler, Hunter, Kaitlyn and Kai. His devoted and close Venezuelan family includes his brother Henry, sisters Milka, Judith and Elvia, and nieces and nephews, Gregorio Jose, Patricia, Claudia, Javier, Regulo, Gabriel, Valeska, Elvia, Freddy, Danny, Milka Alejandra, Xuxa, Josmil, Dasha, Mike and Judith Vanessa. According to Matthew 25:45, "And the King will answer them, 'I assure you: Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me." Dr. Vasquez answered the call with courage his entire beautiful life. A Memorial Mass will take place on Wednesday, September 8 at the Holy Cross Hospital Chapel at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to Light of the World Clinic, 806 E. Prospect Road, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 33309 or the Vasquez Family Foundation at Broward Community Foundation, 1400 E. Broward Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301. My deepest sorrow to the family who have lost a man of incredible value, one who it is evident that he gave of himself without for a moment puting his needs first. I am certain that he is in heaven because there is no other place for someone with so much virtue.

Dear Elaine, No words of mine can soften your sorrow, but I do want to express my deepest sympathy to you and the entire Vasquez family. I have such fond memories of Dr V. when I worked at North Ridge Medical Center back in the 1980's. He was an amazing physician. Such a kind soul. He really did have the "JOY" within. He will be missed dearly! I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

I too had the honor of working with Dr. Vasquez for many years at North Ridge Medical Center. When you think of him, it brings a smile to your face. He was able to touch all of us with his kindness, sense of humor and the compassion he demonstrated toward his patients. After leaving the nursing profession and entering the teaching profession I had a student from South America with a health concern. The first person I thought of was Dr. Vasquez. It had been several years since I had seen him, but he took my call and was able to guide me so that I could help this young man. He truly was a special and unique human being. He will be missed by so many of us. He was a true gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry—
I am not there... I did not die...

God has called his Saint to home. He is now with God and with his mother and father. No words can describe the loss of such a great man of humanity. He will be missed by all those that knew him, his fight to provide care to the uninsured never went unnoticed. He was loved by all that knew him for God gave us to him for a short period of time to do his work and he is now called to home, where he will watch over us. Pleas all pray to him for he is now a saint.

Dr V,
I know you are watching from above. I want you to know that I really enjoyed all the many, many years we spent together. You were a very special person to an enormous amount of people. It was so difficult to watch you suffer in pain over the last several months. I am relieved that your pain is finally over. Don't worry about Elaine and family. There are many of us who will be here for them until it's our turn to come join you. Rest in peace my friend.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
