Dr. Grover Cleveland McDaniel Jr.

Grover McDaniel Obituary

McDaniel, Dr. Grover Cleveland, Jr., died Wednesday night after a long illness. He was 82 years old. A long time resident of Ft. Lauderdale, Dr. McDaniel practiced as an obstetrician and gynecologist, delivering thousands of babies over 40 years. With his wife of nearly 60 years, Anna Toms McDaniel, he was active in medical societies and arts charities. Born in Forest City, NC, Dr. McDaniel attended the University of North Carolina V-12 program and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University. He completed his internship and residencies at Baptist Hospital, Winston Salem, NC, Georgetown Hospital, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, and the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, NJ. He served as a Navy Lieutenant in the Korean War, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He later served as Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, VA. The McDaniels moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1956. Dr. McDaniel practiced with Drs. William Kirkley, J. C. Gilbert, Jr., and George Pickle for 30 years before branching out on his own. Dr McDaniel was elected President of both the Fort Lauderdale Ob/Gyn Society and the Miami Ob/Gyn Society, and was also a member of the South Atlantic Ob/Gyn Society. An energetic teacher, he was a member of the adjunct faculty of the University of Miami School of Medicine, and won the community faculty teaching award from the Ob/Gyn residents in the early 1980s. He was an avid aficionado of jazz and maintained an extensive catalogue of classic and contemporary recordings, as well as an eclectic collection of fountain pens. Dr. McDaniel is survived by his wife, Anna; his daughters, Susan McDaniel, PhD of Rochester, NY, Ann McDaniel of Bethesda, MD, and Mary Johnson of Fairfax, VA; his sons-in-law, Dr. David Siegel of Rochester, NY and Gary Johnson of Fairfax, VA; and his grandchildren, Hanna and Marisa Siegel and Drew and Layne Johnson. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Mollie McDaniel of Raleigh, NC. A memorial service will be held today, Saturday, April 19, at 2:30pm at the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Lauderdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Dr. G. C. McDaniel Women's Fellowship Fund, Institute for the Family, Univ. of Rochester Medical Ctr., 300 East River Road, PO Box 23029, Rochester, NY 14692, or to a charity of your choice.

Anna and girls,
I was so sorry to hear of Mac's passing. We all loved him. You were great neighbors on Del Lago.
Susan, just found out that you live in Rochester. We live outside PennYan-Keuka Lake. We are only one hour away. Love, Lynne (Graf) Roe

Dr. McDaniel was not only my teacher during residency but, also, a wonderful colleague and friend for many years in medical practice. I learned so much from his broad medical experiences and surgical skills and appreciated his great sense of humor as well. I extend my sincere sympathies to Mrs. McDaniel and the entire family. He will be missed by us all.

I read which such sadness today that my dearest doctor of all had passed away. My mother was one of his first patients and he literally saved my life as he made her go on complete bed rest to keep her from losing me. He delivered me in 1958 and then 18 years later, became my gyn. I was his patient until his retirement as was my mom. He was the most dedicated and wonderful doctor and I have missed him ever since he stopped practicing medicine. Ironically, I cannot go to his service today because thanks to him, I am instead going out with friends to celebrate early my 50th birthday which is this coming Tuesday. My prayers and sympathies are extended to his family. Love, Heidi Collins Buitron

Dr. Mac was my doctor from the early 1970s until his retirement in the 1990s.
He delivered both my babies.
He saw me through surgeries and cancer.
He could always be counted on for telling the truth, (whether or not you wanted to hear it), and for wiggling your big toe outside the covers when he came to check on you in the hospital.
There will always be doctors, but there will never be another Dr. Mac.

Dr.Mac's family: Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time and always.
