Guy Metzger Obituary

Guy Henry Metzger, age 81, passed away in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on June 5th, 2023, after a nine-year battle with lung cancer. He was born on April 29th, 1942, to Henry and Heloise in Brooklyn, New York. Guy graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1960. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree at the University of Florida in 1964, and a master's degree in education at Florida Atlantic University in 1970.

On New Year's Eve, 1961, Guy had his first date – and kiss! – with the love of his life, Marjorie Anne Clinton. They were married on April 24th, 1965. In the early years of their marriage, through the summer of 1987, Guy and Margie owned and operated a local day camp out of Birch State Park called Camp Wildwood, "The Camp That Kids Like Best."

Guy enjoyed a long career in education as a teacher, cross country and track coach, and school administrator. The majority of his career was spent at Westminster Academy, where he served as a guidance counselor and then Director of Admissions. During that time, he became a very active member of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. For the past decade, Guy has worked as the Director of Senior Adult Ministry at Coral Ridge, bringing joy to the regular gatherings of "Keenagers."

An avid runner, Guy ran both high school and college track, participated in the Orange Bowl marathon, and competed in the Senior Games. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids, playing games around the dinner table and enjoying annual outings as a family to Jaxon's Ice Cream in Dania Beach. More than anything else, Guy had a deep and passionate love for Jesus that was reflected in the way he cared for and served others.

Guy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margie, his daughter Cindy (Rick) Faulk, his son Matt (Rachel), his daughter Mindy and his seven grandchildren, Melinda (Alex) Griswold, Jonathan (Emma) Faulk, Hannah, Leah, Gavin, Colin and Emma Grace, his sister Gail, and his niece Angela Mercier.

A memorial service will take place at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, June 24th at 1pm, followed by a casual reception.

Mr Metzger led me to the Lord when I was being admitted to WA back in 1991 as I transferred from Ely High School between my Junior and Senior year. I am a life radically changed because of him, George Frost, and Dr Daniel Kanell who all supported me! My wife of 27 years, 4 children and I are eternally grateful! So sorry to hear of your loss!

I remember Guy so fondly. I found my way to his counseling office a couple of times. The best advice he gave me was to fasten my eyes on God instead of circumstances. It was so hard at times, but got easier as I practiced it. He is a loss to this world, but a gift to heaven. Many prayers of sympathy to his family. Love, Gayle Corrigan Esman
