Hamilton Forman Obituary

Forman, Hamilton C., 90, passed away of natural causes at his home in Fort Lauderdale, January 11, 2010. Born to South Florida pioneer parents, Hamilton M. and Blanche C. Forman, Ham ("June" or "Junior") as he was known when he was growing up, was one of Broward County's oldest living natives, having been born April 3, 1919. He is survived by two sons, Miles Austin Forman and Hamilton Collins Forman, Jr., their wives, Christine and Jennifer, respectively, grandchildren Miles, Lori, Timothy, Amanda, Nathaniel, William St. John, Alyssa and Daniel and great granddaughter, Chloe all of Fort Lauderdale. He also leaves behind two nieces, Beverly Bounds and Sandra Seims, as well as two nephews, Walter and Charles with their respective spouses and/or children. Hamilton's parents founded South Florida's first commercial dairy, Forman's Sanitary Dairy, on land they had bought sight-unseen before moving to Florida from East St. Louis, Illinois in 1910. Hamilton grew up on the Dairy, working the many jobs that the Dairy required in order for the cows to be milked twice a day, 365 days of the year. Of course, he milked cows, but he also prepared cows for milking, washed and sanitized bottles, ran the bottling plant, drove a milk truck, mended fences, fertilized the pastures, maintained the equipment, and kept the Dairy's books. Theirs was a close-knit family with just his parents, him and his older brother, Charles. They were indefatigable workers and lived by the philosophy that you could accomplish anything in life if you were willing to do all the work and let others have the credit. The farm life was difficult, particularly during the 1924 Florida land bust, the 1929 stock market crash and ensuing Great Depression, then a World War. Hamilton seldom if ever arrived to school on time, but in his senior year of high school at Fort Lauderdale High, Hamilton was relieved of work responsibilities to be a teenager. He thrived, being student body president, president of the Key Club, and Captain of the Track and Football teams. In addition to being in the Senior Honor Society, he also was voted by his peers as "Most Brains" and "Most Prominence." In 1939, he went to Sierra Madre, California, near Los Angeles, to settle his grandmother's estate. While there he saw lots "in the desert.... near a cold ocean" selling for the outrageous price of $50 each. He marveled that people would pay such a price for a lot, but then again it was warm there. He imagined how popular a spot Fort Lauderdale could become with its lush vegetation, beautiful palm trees and warm water ocean. Upon his return, he convinced his family not to sell the Dairy until it was surrounded by the City of Fort Lauderdale. Then, with $1000 that he borrowed against a life insurance policy his parents had given him, he began buying Murphy Act land, tax deeds and foreclosed properties. To his delight, it wasn't long before the mockers in the recording office began calling him "Mr. Forman." During World War II, he served as night manager at ALCOA in Tennessee while attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He was later inducted into the Army Air Corps. While stationed at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, he met his sweetheart, Doris Marie Davis, a Society Editor for the Tampa Tribune at the USO and they were married on January 7, 1945. Also during the War, his parents were approached by the Navy about purchasing a part of their land for a pilot training facility. Arrangements were made for about 825 acres of improved pasture land to be transferred to the Federal Government for the construction of a wagon wheel shaped landing strip which was named "Forman Field." At the end of the war, the Navy offered it back to the family, but they were more interested in it being set aside for an educational complex, which it was. That land now houses the two Nova elementary grade schools, Nova middle and high schools, Broward College, campuses of Florida Atlantic University, the University of Florida and the McFatter Vocational/Technical campus, plus a police training academy and Nova Southeastern University with its Dolphin Training Facility, Law School, Medical School, Pharmacological School, Business School, etc. Though he was the only one in his family not to complete college, he received an honorary degree from the New York Institute of Technology after its merger with Nova University in the 1970's. The contributions to education made by the Forman family were some of those of which they were most proud. Hamilton and his brother, Charles, were also avid supporters of the Nova Oceanographic Center at the northern end of John U. Lloyd State Park. Shortly after the War, Hamilton, his father, brother and others successfully lobbied the Congress for the creation of the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District, the predecessor of the South Florida Water Management District. In so doing, the western 2/3 of Broward County was set aside as a permanent reservoir for agricultural and municipal water supply. The rest of the state followed suit, so that now the entire state is covered by such water management districts. Hamilton, his brother Charles, and their wives also donated 250 acres on Tampa Bay to Hillsborough County for the creation of E. G. Simmons Recreational Park. In 1955, when the Turnpike divided the Dairy and Hamilton sold several hundred acres of it to a rock miner/road builder, the family closed the Dairy, and Hamilton turned his full attention to politics and philanthropy. For the first time in his life, except for his senior year in high school, Hamilton was able to turn his full attention to his wife and two sons: Austin, who had been born in 1947 and Collins who had been born in 1952. He was now able attend and to get active in his local church, to own a boat and pursue deep sea fishing, to get involved in Scouting, and to pursue a myriad of educational and social interests in which he had been able to have only a superficial involvement before. In 1961, Hamilton was appointed by Governor Farris Bryant to the post of Commissioner of the North Broward Hospital District, and he proudly served on that Board in numerous capacities for 28 years under six governors. Under his leadership, the NBHD closed the all-black Provident Hospital with its sub-standard service to blacks, and amid protests from the staffs of both hospitals and being picketed by the NAACP, he successfully integrated Broward General Hospital, earning it the distinction of being the first hospital district in the South to be fully accredited under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Later it would acquire the land for and build Imperial Point Medical Center and Coral Springs Medical Center. In 1965, he and his nuclear family took their first major overseas trip which lasted nearly three months. They visited the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. After that, he and Doris were bit by the travel bug, and before her death in 1999, they had visited 120 countries together. As long as he was able, Hamilton traveled to the remote parts of the globe seeking to learn about and experience the rich diversity of cultures, flora and fauna in this world. Hamilton got active in local and state politics. He helped mentor and elect dozens of senators and representatives to Congress, the State House, and he also aided local city and County politicians, as well as County and Circuit judges obtain and maintain public office. In the early 1970s, he helped assimilate a large population of northeastern retirees into the political scene of Broward County. By giving these new residents a seat at the table, Hamilton was able to return control of local politics to the Democratic Party, of which he was a life-long member. For many years, aspiring young and not so young politicians beat a path to his door to seek his counsel and his support in their election bids. He and his older son Austin succe

Hamilton Forman was an amazing man. I think it was the way he had of making you feel that you were the only one who mattered to him. I was fortunate enough to live in his home for a year and to have him ultimately make me a shrimp expert (which may come in handy since the Gulf spill, and imagine, he isn't even here...or is he?). I'll never forget how he beamed at everyone and how they beamed even brighter after he gave them a subtle ego boost. Especially his sons. I hope you realize how lucky you were to have him as a dad. I will always remember how he used to call you both "my magnificent son". And he meant it. I will never forget him, and the lessons he taught me. If I could, I wouldn't just light a candle...I would fill the whole church with candles.

Dear Collins and Family,
I know how hard it is to lose a parent. Marcia and I only just heard of your loss from my mother. I believe the only time I met your father was at Jennifer's and your wedding. I still remember his friendliness and force of personality when he introduced himself in the reception line.
It has been a long time that we have been out of Broward, but we still think of you and yours, and our prayers go out for you and your family at this time.

Respectfully,

Jim and Marcia Aurand

Dear Austin and Family: I was really sorry to hear about Hamm and his passing. Hamm and I had alot of great laughs together!! When we would meet for lunch or he would show off his latest trophy(antique)from places like Poland. Since I moved out of Davie I lost touch. My deepest condolences, he will be missed.

Dear Austin and Family,

He was a legend to me through your eyes and a father to you through my father’s eyes. May you find peace in knowing that he graced us with his vision.

He certainly knew how to make dreams a reality. With an ingenious palette, he painted Fort Lauderdale. An inspiration to us all and a man who will be missed.

To say, “thank you”, is an understatement.

Through his creations he will always be remembered. Through his spirit, he will remain in our hearts.

We know that you have worked hard to carry out his legacy. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had the pleasure of knowing Hamilton and Doris Forman when I attended First Christian Church in the late 80's and early 90's. As a Board Member of the church I discussed a financial need a member had with Hamilton and he took care of it in a manner that was creative and met the immediate need yet allowed repayment to the church with no interest. He gained my respect as a kind yet astute business man. I moved home to Tennessee in 1993 but will always remember them as fine Christian people that loved people.

I only met Mr. Hamilton C. Forman twice. Each time was at his Charter School of Excellence's annual banquet. I admired the manner in which he helped children from single-parent families and taught them that they were special.
I just returned from Mr. Hamilton Forman's Memorial Service and I am grateful to have met him those two times. I am also grateful to have met his daughters-in-law and his two surviving sons. His grandchildren seemed on task and I am glad to see his legacy of Christianity, democracy, and his pioneering spirit lived on in them. I want to thank his family for being gracious hosts and I wish them well in their future endeavors. My sympathy goes to each person that Mr. Hamilton Forman helped spiritually, economically, and academically... which appears to be all South Floridians who went to a Southeastern hospital or public school. Thank you for reading and may the spirit of Hamilton C. Forman and the will of God be with us all.

On behalf of the family of Nova Singers, the concert community choir of Nova Southeastern University, we thank the family for the opportunity to have sung at Mr. Forman's memorial service. It was truly an honor and so many of us old-timers who have sung with the choir since inception 33 years ago have appreciated all he has done for education and music in Broward County. Without Mr. Forman there would be no NSU and no Nova Singers. Blessings to the family on behalf of the Nova Singers!

To know Mr. Forman was to know a man with a vision which spanned the ages. To be in his presence was to know that you would leave with a “life story” you would always remember. However, most of all, to hear him pray, you knew and felt the spirit of God………because he was a man of God.
As a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Mr. Forman was one of the most God-like human beings to come into my life; and, I owe a great deal of that presence to my success as a principal, county-level administrator, acting superintendent, and interim superintendent------all in Broward County.
Mr. Forman prayed with me in person, by telephone, and whenever there was a need to call on our Father, God. I remember the time he called me to pray with him and for his wife, Doris (a lady of charm, grace, and wisdom). I also prayed for Mrs. Forman in my private times of prayer. I loved them both dearly.
I loved and respected Mr. Hamilton Forman as a Christian. I believe he has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior. May God rest his soul.

I am proud to have known Hamilton Forman for almost 50 years. He was a kind man, but a fierce competitor who fought for what he believed. He was a fine Christian and a fearless leader who did what he thought was right even when it was unpopular. He was devoted to his family and raised two fine sons of which he was very proud. Both his sons became leaders in their own areas of interest. For decades he was a major force in building the fabric of Broward, sometimes in public, but was often behind the scenes. He not only did much for the community, but he quietly helped many, many people's lives to be better through his generosity and caring. Although he often didn't get the credit that he deserved he helped make Broward a better place for all of us. He will be missed. Jack Loos

Your Dad was a pioneer and a one of a kind gentleman. I have great memories of him and your mom from my early days as a Kelley. He helped me and advised me, encouraged me and was always kind. I know that he is with the Lord and will always be remembered in the hearts of those he loved. My condolences on your loss and my love and prayers to all of the Forman family.

Our daughter, Laura, new member of the Colorado Silver Bullets in the 90's, went to Hamilton then and asked him to buy her a $9,000 truck to load her baseball equipment. He immediately wrote out a check.
When she received her $3,000 check each two weeks, she took $1,000 to his office to repay him. On the ninth payment, as she handed it to Hamilton, tears came to his eyes as he said: "Bank's still open Girl!"

From 1970 through 1976, I had the privilege of being Administrative Assistant to Hamilton and Dr. Charles Forman with offices in the United Federal Building. During that time, I had close contact with many wonderful Forman family members and gained insight to the minds that shaped and continue to mold Broward County and beyond. To each member of that family, I express sympathy for the passing of Hamilton from this earth but offer joyful thanks that his Christian faith promises eternal rest in the arms of our Lord.

My grandfather, Floyd Hull, has conveyed to me all that Mr. Forman has done over the years...and been involved with in Broward County. Although I never met Mr. Forman, I wanted to extend my condolences to his family. I appreciate the tremendous support that he provided to me for my Eagle Scout project a few years ago. His key support was important in me being able to establish a baseball program for underprivileged children which is now celebrating its fifth year. Again, my deepest condolences to the family.

To the entire Forman Family - Austin, Collins, Amanda:
I send my sincerest condolences for your loss. Hamilton was a wonderful man, and I will always remember how far ahead of his time he was. This community is a better place because Hamilton touched so many in so many different ways. His foresight helped this community to acquire an ALF in the late 1980's that is now the valuable community resource known as Broward House, caring for HIV/AIDS clients and those dealing with chemical dependency.
Hamilton touched my life, and my family. He will be missed, and remembered with warm, kind thoughts and huge gratitude for all he accomplished.
With love and prayers,

January 14, 2010

To Austin, Collins, Amanda, and all of the Forman Family,
My heart goes out to each of you at this time, as I know the genuine love, respect, and closeness you always shared with one another.
Hamilton arose earlier in the morning than anyone I ever knew in Broward County. He had a special sense, and his fingers on the pulse of all of the comings and goings, politically and otherwise in Broward County, Florida, and the nation. He was amazing.
After his lovely Doris passed away, he slowed down a little on his world travels, and I missed those wonderful hand written post cards from his exotic and most unusual destinations. I still have them.
His sage advise to me, from time to time, always brought his thought process clearly into focus. I will miss that, too.
My wish for each of you is that you retain and honor all that you learned from his wisdom, kindness, and charity. He was a very unique man, and one I shall remember fondly.
Warmest regards,
Senator Debby Sanderson, retired

My sincere sympathy to the Forman family at their loss.

I knew Ham when he was on the Planning Council and I was on the staff. He was always very interesting to talk to because of his great source of knowledge of old Broward history.

I had found a map that he made in 1942, while he was a private in the US Army, showing the historic water flow in the Everglades. When I gave it back to him, he noticed that he had put a $20 reward on it back during WWII to anyone who found it and retured it to him. He pulled a $100 bill out of his pocket and gave it to me smiled and said "Inflation!" Needless to say, he was very happy to get his map back.

I hope the community will take the time to Celebrate the Life of an honorable man, Hamilton Forman. When I think of Hamilton, I think immediately of the following two words: Family and Education. They were always his priority. My sympathy to Austin and Collins, as well as their wives and children. You have honored your father well.

It has been said that a man is measured by those he has aided. By this measure, Hamilton Forman was a giant among men. His dedication to Broward County and it's people was extraordinary. He will be missed.

Blessings to the family of this wonderful man. Hamilton was an inspired community and spiritual leader. When he said "I have something I want you to do" you didn't hesitate to say yes because it was always something cool, challenging and rewarding. I first met him when I was 13. He prayed for me and gave me an olive cross. Who could not love a man who cared so much for others and showed it? He and his dear wife, Doris, along with his friends, Bob and Mary Kelley, inspired the lives of many in their community. God has blessed you, Ham, and continues to do so. You are truly loved.

Thank you Mr. Forman for the wonderful things you have done, for the many lives you have touched in a meaningful way and thank you God for putting this lovely man in amongst us who were fortunate enough to have known this man! Hamilton Forman was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He was courteous and generous, he had the strongest faith, genuine wisdom and he was the nicest man I've had the pleasure to know. Thank you.

A true gentleman... I remember having lunch with Mr.Forman and my grandad some 25 years ago or so. Mr.Forman gave me, then a young man in my late teens, insight and encouragement regarding life in general. He was one in a million and Florida was lucky to have him.

I grew up down the street from Mr. Forman and still live here to this day. For the last 40 years I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with his family in many capacities. Mr. Forman's love for South Florida, the Everglades and it's people made him such a contributing man. I am fortunate to have known Mr. Forman and wish the family my condolences.
