I "discovered" Dr. Steinberg when my husband and I lived in Lauderdale by the Sea. When we moved, I continued to drive the distance to see Dr. Steinberg because she was such a competent, professional, and likeable physician. In fact I got my husband to see her too. Dr. Steinberg gave him a series of treatments that helped him with painful scars. No other physician gave my husband this option. We were shocked today when we discovered Dr. Steinberg had passed. We wish the family our condolences and hope that patient loyalty and trust in "Dr. Janee" help you in your grief.

July 4, 2012

Twenty four years ago I took my live-in housekeeper to see Dr. Steinberg. I loved my Martha. She was from the jungle in Peru, spoke no English, and had a skin condition. I wanted to help her with it. My mom used to go to Dr. Steinberg...I knew she had to be good. I will never forget the level of compassion that Dr. Steinberg showed. She was so humane and non-judgmental. I never forgot how wonderful I felt about the way she treated Martha.
Many years later I went back to Janee a few times for some dermal fillers. I saw her several months ago at Fresh Market. I purposely bumped into her and jokingly said, "Excuse me miss, do I need a touch up?" We laughed together as she said, 'Well, you can use a little touch up." I told her I would see her soon...and I was looking forward to it. I had no idea she was ill.
This morning I went on the website expecting to see the special discounts she/Jay post. Instead I saw, "In memory of..." I froze; goose pimples ran up my arms as I held back the tears.
I remember Janee Steinberg from the first day I met her. I remember how good she made me feel. I remember how kindly she treated my Martha who is my best friend til today. I remember how caring and compassionate she was. I remember she was a dynamic and talented doctor too! She will be missed by everyone's life she has touched.

Her reputation preceded her and I'm so sorry she has passed.
My condolences to the family and mostly Wendy who I had the privilege to meet and discuss my situation with. May you take comfort in the wonderful memories you must have of a truly remarkable woman!

My condolences to your family. it seemed like not long ago when I first met her as I was part of a caravan of ageless or aging ladies from Jacksonvile all with appointments scheduled. As I waited in the exam room for the doctor, a very chic beautiful woman,I figured in her mid 40's with long flowing blond hair strutted in -dressed in a mini skirt, high heeled boots, and a crisp white lab coat,
Turned out that beautiful smart lady was Dr. Janee. Wow, four years ago and it seems like yesterday. That great memory will live forever. She was the best. RIP

Our Mom's Eulogy (from Fawn and Wendy Winkelman)

INTRODUCTION
I am Dr. Fawn Winkelman, first born daughter of Dr. Jeff Winkelman and Dr. Janee Steinberg. I am Wendy Winkelman, second born daughter of Dr. Jeff Winkelman and Dr. Janee Steinberg.
Where do we start? There are so many people here including immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues, current employees, former employees, drug reps, and patients. Even though today is a sad day, there is so much warmth in this room. It isn't just from the massive amount of people in here. It is from the love in this room that emanated from our mom, Dr. Janee.
We just wanted to take the time to thank my mom's doctors who all knew her personally for 30 years and were able to remove themselves emotionally and treat her with the utmost care.
WENDY'S SPEECH
My mom was the most amazing person that I have ever known. I have had the privilege to work with her in her office for the past several years. Working with my mom, made me realize what I wanted to do for my career and guided me into going to aesthetic school to become an aesthetician. Watching her work with patients every day, I got to see her bedside manner and compassion. I learned how to talk to patients and explain procedures and even found myself using the same mannerisms and phrases that she would use. She had such an impact on so many patients and staff who have stayed loyal to her throughout the years.
One of the happiest memories that my mom and I shared was planning my wedding. It was so nice to have my mom with me for every aspect and detail of the planning process. I will cherish every second of that wedding as it was the last big event in our family that my mom was at. I am so fortunate that she was able to share in my special day and get to see that I've found true love and happiness. She looked absolutely stunning and I know she had a blast!!
My mom was such a kind and warm person. She welcomed my husband, Ian Parker, my in-laws, Andrea and Jon Parker, and my brother-in-law Max Parker with open arms. It is very rare now-a-days that the parents of the married couple get along so well with each other. We were so lucky and fortunate to have had that.
The biggest lesson I have learned from my mom was to always forgive everyone and never hold any grudges. My mom had this rare and special quality and I am so fortunate to have learned this lesson from her. As they say, mother knows best.

FAWN'S SPEECH
My mom, sister, and I are all best friends and became even closer after my father passed away in 1998. I have so many happy memories of my mom! I feel fortunate that I took the time to drive home when I was away in school or in residency to have dinner, go to concerts, shop, get my nails and hair done with her. Those times will be cherished.
Our mom was so forgiving and opened her heart to everyone. She met random people on airplanes and became friends with them and even impacted their lives. Anytime she was upset, it was hard to tell as she always maintained a positive and forgiving outlook. This quality should be ingrained inside all of us. She was a true saint. She has saved so many lives and I know some of her patients are here now who were or had a loved one diagnosed with Melanoma. She was extremely intelligent to have graduated from medical school and become a Dermatologist in 1971. Nowadays, women make up the majority of newly graduating physicians and Dermatologists. but back then, it was unheard of. Not only did you have to be very intelligent, but you had to be very influential.
She became an amazing Dermatologist, but she was a true pioneer in her field. She was one of the first female derms in S Florida to delve into the cosmetic world and get privileges for liposuction at a hospital. She has taught so many other derms and physicians about cosmetic derm. She absolutely loved working and loved her office. She even continued to work as much as she could all the way through March of this year. It was very therapeutic for her to be in that office.
(FAWN)Most knew that my mom was my biggest influence in my career and my biggest support system. I promised her that as a Physician, I would carry out her dream of her practice being as big as it can be! Very few people out there know that it was my dad's dream for my mom to work with her husband and her kids as a true family practice. This in turn became her dream after my dad's passing and Wendy, Jay, and I are prepared to carry this out and make her proud! I would love to have the respect that she got from her patients and staff. I have big shoes to fill but I am ready to put them on and run! She will always be the Laser queen, but watch out world, cause here comes the laser princess.
Our mom is so incredible in that no matter who she meets, the person is affected by her. She had nurses that only knew her for a few days who felt an immediate connection with her. She had nurses who were her patients for many years and it was her desire to have the very people she took care of take care of her. It gave her great pleasure to know she would see them again. Many of you don't know this but I sat by her bedside day in and day out and was her personal nurse. It gave me great pleasure to care of my mom. It has made me a better physician today. Throughout her final hospital stay, my mom had many opportunities for one-on-one discussions with me as well as other family members. I even had the opportunity to discuss how to contact my mom when I need her. This is so unbelievable and it gave me complete closure.
On May 31, I lost my doggie of 14 yrs. This dog was very important to me as my father got him for me before he passed. Coincidentally, at the same time my mom went into the hospital this past month, my dog got sick and was in the ICU. He seemed to reverse from his sick state and was going to be discharged home. During that time, I visited him and asked him to give my mom his strength so that she had some extra pain free time with all of us so she can see her family and friends. The very next day, my dog became ill again and passed away. I truly believe that my dad was inside my dog Snickers all these years and my dog gave up his life for my mom to have extra time. When I told my mom, at first it upset her cause she knows my dog has gotten me through tough times and she was worried as a mother does that I would need him to get me through this tough time. I reassured her and told her that Snickers gave her his strength. She held onto that statement. The next day, I brought her a stuffed animal of my dog and she stated petting him and cried. She thanked him for the extra time. She was grasping that dog even to the very second she took her last breath. When she took her last breath, I want everyone to know she was peaceful and pain free and at rest.
Our dad was always waiting for her with his best magic trick yet. She could not be happier to go see him. I don't think she had much time to bereave for him as she had a practice to run and children to take care of as a single mother. It gives us great pleasure to know she is now with him again!
LIMERICK
(FAWN) Although Wendy and I don't have biological parents, my mom left us with so many pseudo parents! We'd like to conclude with a limerick, which my mom liked to write on every single card she gave us. It always starts the same way…..
(WENDY)
65 yrs have come and gone
And you have lived THE life
You wore so many hats
Mother, doctor, friend and wife

(FAWN)
You were strong, courageous, and selfless
Respected, calming, forgiving, and smart
You had so many good qualities
But most important was your heart

(WENDY)
The love surrounding YOU was unconditional
Which shows a reflection of your power
You were the most incredible woman
We will all miss you day after day, hour after hour

(FAWN)
A lesson you taught us
Was to always remain calm
We will treasure your advice forever
We miss you and will always love you, DR. MOM!! ---- WENDY AND FAWN
