My deepest sympathy to all her family, I have been trying to contact her for several years. I've been going through many boxes and found a Christmas card saying she was going to go to North Caroline and getting all her warm cloths together to be with family for Christmas. I wanted to send her and her family s some Photos when our kids were small and fishing At Sanibal Island on the western side of Florida. After we moved from Florida in 1976 on our way to Okinawa, Japan, I would visit Joan & family. we were all adventurers. I wish I could find some of the children now.
Joan let me look at her book with lists all the ships and passengers that came from Europe into Philadelphia Port and found my Darst family and husband Protzman family

Still thinking of Joan so often despite the years since her passing. What would Joan think of this? What would Joan say about that? Always a steady influence despite her passage, Joan remains in our hearts and minds.

Joan Brookwell taught me English at Escuela Internacional Sampedrana and she was one of the best teachers I've ever had. I was friends with her son Hunter and know her daughter Laura (Lori). Joan painted water colors and I just came across one of her paintings that my late father had bought. I tried to contact her, but I find out that she has passed. If her children see this message, I'd like to speak to them. Henry Fransen, Jr. 985-502-2856

Joan's family:
I cut Joan's hair for the last 20+ yrs. She was an amazing woman. We always had plants to discuss and politics to mull over. A true liberal, Joan was a voice of reason and had such a wonderful wit. She was eternally young and her wisdom was something I came to appreciate and love.
I'll miss her to pieces. You should all be very proud to have called her your own.
Much love,
Tim Crooks, Fort Lauderdale, FL

I met Joan when she was my editor at the Fort Lauderdale News, and we remained friends for 47 years. Last year she edited my seventh book--and what an astute editor she is. How I shall miss her wit and intellect. I cannot believe she is gone. We shared affinity for exotic worldwide travel. "Janice, you are the only other person I know who would have joined me at 3 a.m. sliding down a muddy river bank in Australia just to catch a glimpse of a duck-billed platupus." Joan said. Joan was witty, kind and inspiring. All the "old crew" at the FLN are gone now. It's #30# Joan, but never in our memories.

You encouraged me to write down my stories about a war I fought so many years ago. You made me feel proud again. My book is dedicated to you. I shall miss you.

Joan ... Since meeting in the composing room of the old Fort Lauderdale News building on North New River Drive East nearly 48 years ago, you have been a steady, trusted presence in life's twists and turns. Throughout these decades, you seemed ageless, even in July when we last shared fried oysters. Rest In Peace, Joan, after an adventure-filled life well lived. Your friendship always will be treasured.
