Joanne Johnsen Obituary

April 21, 1930 – October 14, 2023

Joanne Shupert Johnsen died peacefully following a long illness on October 14 at John Knox Village, Pompano Beach, FL, where she had lived for several years. Joanne was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 21, 1930 to Evlyn and George Shupert. In 1945 the family moved to Mt. Kisco, NY and Joanne attended high school at Horace Greeley high school in Chappaqua, NY. With an interest in fashion and design she attended and received her degree from Tobe-Coburn School in NYC, which majored in these areas of business. In 1949 she married David Quinby, a high school classmate. They lived in Ithica, NY while David finished his degree in hotel management at Cornell University. Their first child, David, Jr. was born there, followed by Richard Alan, born in Mt. Kisco, NY and Karla Kipp, Watertown, NY. The family lived for the next few years in the Thousand Islands, NY, where David managed a resort hotel. Several years later following her divorce, Joanne and the children moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In 1966 she met and married Dr. David Johnsen, a plastic surgeon from Ft. Lauderdale.

Joanne was well known in Ft. Lauderdale for her association through the years with numerous cultural and civic causes. She was active in the Opera Guild, the Symphony Society, the Fort Lauderdale Museum of the Arts Executive Board and Beaux Arts serving on numerous fund-raising committees. She also participated on the Broward Arts Council, Beach Advisory Committee, and the Ft. Lauderdale Childrens' Theater. She was particularly proud to be appointed a charter member of the then newly formed Florida Fine Arts Council that voted and passed upon grants that encouraged and developed the arts in Florida. Joanne was well known as a gracious hostess, superb cook, and wine connoisseur.

Joanne was predeceased by her parents; husband, Dr. David Johnson; son, Richard Alan Quinby, and brother, George Shupert Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Karla Kipp Quinby-Richter (William); son, David Quinby Jr. (Marcia), sister, Sally-Jean Shepard (James); five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

During years when associated with the Sun-Sentinel´s Shoreline section and later with Yolanda Maurer´s The Best magazine, I found Joanne ever so helpful for whatever the need or occasion. Her understated taste was to be much admired. My condolences to her family.

My deepest condolences to you all. Joanne was a big part of my family. My father, Kurt, took Joanne to the senior prom at Horace Greely when it was in Chappaqua. My mother Sarah Jane Farell ( Bancroft}, along with Mary Jane Kopp ( Pantry}, and Nancy Smith ( Van Noppen, H. Allen's Daughter) were quite the best of friends. Then there were the Lark commercials. My wife, Anne, and I would meet Joanne and David at a little sea food restaurant that they loved of off 17th St, very good food ! Then , last but not least , I would see Joanne in Publix , with her aide, looking beautiful, quite the lady, as always, and we would banter about for a few minutes. She will be missed.
