My heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends, and fellow patients of Dr. Kraut. I only just learned today of his passing and was so very surprised and saddened. I have been under his diligent and compassionate care for the many years I've lived in Brookline and will miss my every-4-months visits to him as he carefully monitored my eye problems, taking time to explain things and always with time for a smile, laugh and a joke. He was kindness itself, a wonderful doctor, and the best and most caring human being. He will be sorely missed.

I first met Joel at MEEI when I was a staff optometrist with Low Vision Services as 1 of my activities. I rolled a small 4 drawer yellow-enameled cart to wherever we saw Low Vision patients- usually in the Cornea Service. I wore a white lab coat and when I told Joel if he got me a certain white hat I could sell Good Humor ice cream he broke out in paroxysms of laughter. He loved practical jokes, but never to embarass, and had an infectious laugh. Joel had me join him and Dr. Albert Sloane in their B'line office and later Drs. Elliot Finkelstein and John Woog. For the 12 years I was with the group I probably saw more of Joel everyday than even my own family. He cared deeply about his patients' welfare and advocated for them whenever it was needed. Aside from from his clinical skills, he was a gifted listener and showed kindness and restraint which his patients appreciated. Bonnie and I enjoyed his spontaneous laughter, his cosmopolitan knowledge and eclectic taste in movies and literature. We will miss all this and have lost a good friend. At this difficult time we hope all his family will reflect on Joel's warm and caring manner and take comfort in his wonderful laughter and ready embrace.

I want to express my deepest sympathies on this sudden and tragic loss. Dr. Kraut has been our family's opthomologist for as long as I can recall. He did one of his first cataract surgeries on my mom in both eyes. He has always made time to see us for any problems. When my mom had a stroke and developed a pain behind her eye, he made time for her to come in immediately. I am shocked and sadened by his passing and wich his family strenth in the said time of loss and pain. Dr. Kraut will be sorely missed as he was one of a kind--a hand's on doc who did everything to make his patients at ease. He was the definition of a gentle man.

Our deepest sympathy to Dr. Joel A. Kraut's family. My husband just saw the death notice in the newspaper. I have been a patient of Dr. Joel A. Kraut since a teenager through Dr. Albert Sloane. They were both wonderful doctors. Dr. Kraut has always taken the time to listen and care. I also had the opportunity to volunteer at his Brookline office for a short time before I moved to Florida. I just saw him in June 2004 and we discussed Florida living. I wrote him this past year telling him I had a wonderful experience at the Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind with Independent Living and a five week computer course. Dr. Kraut actually took the time to write me a hand written reply which I will always keep close at hand. I always trusted his advice. He introduced me many years ago to a wonderful retinal specialist when he was worried about my cataracts and my vision. Even though I lived in Florida recently I always dropped in when I was up there for a visit. I actually did give him a hug when I moved to Florida because that is how close I felt to him. My husband was only a recent patient of his and will miss him. My parents were also patients of Dr. Kraut for many years. It is a loss for so many people. I am almost speechless. His office always knew my name that is how long I've been a patient although I just shortened it. Again our deepest sympathy to his family, fellow doctors, staff including Mass. Eye & Ear Infirmary Low Vision Rehabilitation Center where I was also a patient. We will really miss him but I especially since I knew him for so long. He was always there to help me when I needed him.

Our heartfelt sympathy to the entire family. We heard about Joel's death last evening from our daughter. He was not only a GREAT Opthalmologist but a very human and wonderful person. We will never forget him. It will not be the same to go back to Boston and not see him. Again, our love and condolances to the entire family, and especially to Ellie, whom we do not know, and to David, whom we have seen grow into a very nice young man. Fondly, Betty and Al Marlin

My deepest sympathy goes out to Dr. Kraut's family.

I met Dr. Kraut for the first time when I was 3 years old. I had to sit on my father's lap for the exam so that Dr. Kraut could see my eyes. I will always be thankful for what he did for me and for so many other people. He truly was a great man and a wonderful doctor.
