John LoZito Obituary

John LoZito, known to loved ones as "Johnny" peacefully left this Earth on May 20, 2020. John, 69, injected color into the lives of everyone who knew or met him – and would likely protest that the news of his passing was printed only in black and white. He leaves behind family, friends and fans who will miss his zest for life, opinions, fashion advice and recipe for pasta sauce. John is survived by his sister Katherine Damkohler, and her husband Walter; nephew Gregory Cassiere, and his partner Selina Ye; nieces Leigh, Stacy, Lisa Samaan, and her husband, Max; great nephew Gianni Cassiere, and many other relatives and friends.

John was born in the Bronx, N.Y. to the late John and Stella LoZito. In New York, he honed his craft as an interior designer, eventually moving to Hollywood, Fl. more than 20 years ago. John worked at the DCOTA in Ft. Lauderdale, and became a renowned and award-winning interior designer. John's hands were never still: gesticulating every point in a story, holding a glass of the finest Prosecco in a fabulous outfit, dancing, shopping that he loved to do, or hugging everyone he met – sometimes, all of the above. When not designing in Florida or New York, John could be found on the phone gushing over a new design or pictures of Gianni, travelling (most often to Rome and Sicily to visit family), at a fundraiser for his favorite cause, at the beach reading a new book or gathering together family and friends. To honor John's memory memorial donations can be made to Education Through Music; ETMonline.org  and/or  Promise to Aid: promisetoaid.org

John truly believed that life was a banquet, and the words "Live! Live! Live!" made famous by Auntie Mame were his life's motto and dearest commandment. And Live! Live! Live! is exactly what John did.

John, WOW I just found out of your passing because Today would be your birthday and after meeting you, I texted you every year on your birthday. I wondering if you didn't get the message on last year because no reply but now I understand why!! I can't believe that you are gone. As everyone has stated your infectious smile could light up any room. From the moment that we met you at DCOTA, you welcomed us in after my husband admired your car, while not knowing us from a can of paint. You took us around introduced us to so much with the Interior Design Center. The countless hours that you spent with us to help design our new home, flying in to stay with us and making sure that everything was perfect will never be forgotten, and on today as I wanted to wish you Happy Birthday again, I find this! I am in a state of shock because after getting a new phone and just realizing that I no longer had your number. I decided to google your name and find this, REST IN PEACE AND LOVE my friend. Love always Nina and Frank Dixon from Memphis, TN

Truly one of a kind! I still work in the DCOTA, and John would visit us pretty much everyday of the week (his second office) just to sit and chat. Sometimes I know he is still around. <3

I knew him as "Johnny Boy". I haven't seen him since dating his Cousin in 1967 to 1970. However, I remember him so well. I remember his smile, which could light up a room and his always upbeat personality. He never said anything when I was dating his cousin even though it was on the sneak at times!... lol. I'm so sorry I couldn't get to see him again before he passed. A truly special person who will surely be missed by many. RIP Johnny Boy. Thanks for making the world a better place

Although it has been a very long time since we were together, I have wonderful memories of the very happy times our families spent together up the country. At the time, Johnny was very close with my cousin Fran and I and we were both very heartbroken to learn of his passing. Im sure he is causing some kind of mischief in heaven. My condolences to Kathy, Richard and cousins Eddy, Mark, Ellen, etc.

I worked at DCOTA at the front desk and John would never pass by without a smile and a big hello. The day of 9/11 we were together in the lobby early that morning. At the time my daughter went to school in NYC and of coarse I was a wreck and John was so caring to me that day. Soon after I left DCOTA and many years later I ran into John at a Italian restaurant on the 18th anniversary of 9/11. I hadnt seen Jon in all those years and I said Im not sure you remember me and he said of coarse I do! We remembered all about that morning and I told him I thought of him every anniversary..he was such a nice guy..was so shocked to hear of his passing. Sending sympathy to his family and friends..will never forget his kindness.

John was a man for all seasons. He knew just what to say at any given time. He made each person he touched feel like they were the most important person in the entire world.
Meeting John over 20 years ago for me, was a burst of sunlight. His smile, his demeanor and his welcoming energy was just a few of his of his wonderful traits. He possessed so many. Our long telephone calls in the evening were always something that I looked forward to. Going places with Johnny was always the best. He loved to have fun and we surely did have that. Johnny would make it happen.
His deep devotion to his family was abounding. He would share stories and always out of love. He was so very proud of his sister Kathy and he would let you know this all the time. He loved her with all of his heart. She was his rock....and his family (familia as he would say) were of the utmost importance to him. There was nothing that came close!
If Johnny was your friend it was all the way...
Loyal to the extreme.
I will miss you my friend.
Rest In Peace!
Hopefully, we will meet again.
