John Yerger Obituary

Yerger, John H., age 92, of Boca Raton, died March 19th, 2006. Mr. Yerger was a native of Reading, PA, coming to Boca Raton in 1976 after his retirement as Senior Vice President of the United Way of America in Washington, DC, national headquarters for United Way. He remained as a consultant after that time. Over a 40 year span of service, he directed fund raising campaigns that utilized 20 million volunteers raising an estimated seven and a half billion dollars. He graduated from Muhlenberg College and held a Masters Degree from Boston University. He did graduate work in management at the University of Chicago. He also spent much time in Ottawa, Canada, then forming the first United Way in Toronto in 1956 that led to the formation of 150 United Way programs in that country. He was the recipient of a citation from the President of the United States in 1946. In 1961 he was invested in the Most Venerable British Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem for "conspicuous service in the cause of humanity" by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Mr. Yerger served as president of the Boca Raton Kiwanis Club in 1982-83 and also as a Board Member of the Boca Atlantic Homeowners Association. He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, Boca Raton, and Boca Raton Chapter #1091 AARP. He is survived by his wife Grace Ach-Yerger, a daughter Mrs. Pamela L. Zarab and a granddaughter Samirah Zarab, both of Lisle, IL. Memorial services will be at 11AM on April 1, 2006 at Advent Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be in Memorial Gardens of Zion Lutheran Church, Deerfield Beach. Friends may make contributions to their local United Way.
