Joy Rubin Obituary

Joy grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before accepting an art scholarship at the Moore Institute of Art, she worked as a statistician at the phone company and while there she was selected to work as an engineering draftswoman at age 19 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard drawing blueprints for WWII submarines. President Franklin Roosevelt came for the christening of the submarine her team designed. She was selected to stand next to the President in his wheelchair. In 1955, Joy, her husband, and three children moved to Hollywood, Florida. She opened The Hollywood Art School in downtown Hollywood. It soon became a school and an art supply store, then Joy Rubin's Art Emporium; later, with her son Ivan, it became Art Explosion, a very successful art store. With macular degeneration plaguing her vision she went back to school at age 53 and earned a degree in psychology. She loved being a psychologist and only retired in March at 100 years old. She is predeceased by her sons Marc, and Ivan (Todd Browne); she leaves behind her daughter Pearl (Joel) Feiss; and grandchildren: Lesli (David) Gillette, Louis (Adi) Reinstein, Mindy (Phillip) Brodsky, Gregory (Monika) Feiss, Laura (Andrew) Reichgut; and great grandchildren: Sydney Feiss, Samantha (Rachel Dolan) Reichgut, Evan Rosenblatt, Liat Malka, Marni Rosenblatt, Zachary Reichgut, Tova Malka, Racheli (Mordi) Nisenbaum, Daniel Reinstein, Shushan Feiss, Jonathan Reinstein, Jolie Feiss, Yonah Feiss, Matan Feiss, Simon Brodsky, Jordan Brodsky; and her nephew William (Susan) Matz. Joy was a longtime resident of Hollywood and Hallandale Beach, Florida.

Donations in Joy's honor can be made in support of the arts to: The Posnack School, 5810 S. Pine Island Road, Davie, FL 33328. "The Joy of Art Walk" is the school's annual art show named for her.

Services and interment will be at the Beth David Memorial Gardens and Cemetery, 3201 NW 72 Avenue, Hollywood, FL 33024 on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 9:30AM.
