Lula M. Gary

1936 - 2018

Lula May (McVicker) Gary, 81, of Pembroke Pines, Florida passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018. She was born in Manheim, WV, on November 16, 1936, to the late Everett and Effie (Sanders) McVicker. Lou, which was the name she liked to be called, graduated from Rowlesburg High School in 1954. She married her high school sweetheart James J. Gary on December 5, 1955, who was by her side until she left us to be with the Lord. Lou was a devoted Air Force wife and mother. When they retired in Florida, she was a loyal member of the two church communities, Peace United Methodist in South Miami, and when they moved north in1992, they joined the New Horizon Methodist Church in Southwest Ranches. She was a devoted church volunteer at New Horizon and served on the mission group, joy circle, the women's craft group, and delivered meals in the Meals on Wheels and SHARE programs. Lou was preceded in death by her brothers Victor McVicker, Leo McVicker, and sister, Joycelyn (McVicker) Ayersman. She is survived by her two children and their spouses: Cynthia (Gary) and Michael Helferstay of Carson California; and Judy (Gary) and Michael Schmelzer, of Pembroke Pines, FL. She is also survived by three grandchildren, two with spouses: Kristina Helferstay of Carson, CA, Michael and Danielle Helferstay, of San Pedro, CA, and Aaron and Joy Schmelzer of Merrimack, NH. She was also blessed to have three great grandchildren: Kimberlyn Helferstay (age 9), Kinsley Helferstay (age 4), and Colin Schmelzer (age 3). Visitation will be Tuesday, June 19, 2018, 2:00pm – 4:00pm with a Service at 2:30pm at Landmark Funeral Home.
