Michael Friedland Memoriam

Michael L. Friedland, M.D. 8/30/42-8/13/15 Founding Dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Dr. Friedland graduated from Downstate Medical School and clinically trained in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology. He accepted a position on staff at Brown University where he continued to practice as well as train residents. After Brown, he accepted an assignment as Chief of Medicine at Bridgeport, CT. Dr. Friedland became Dean of the Clinical Campus of Syracuse in Binghamton, NY, where he became very involved in rural medicine. He was nationally recognized for his expertise in Regional Medical Programs. In 1997, he became Dean of the Medical School at Texas A&M. Dr. Friedland went on to Kansas City, MO, where he was Dean at UMKC. After UMKC, he developed a regional campus for the University of West Virginia as its founding Regional Dean. In 2004, he accepted a position with Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Friedland's leadership, vision and determination were the bedrock upon which the creation of an independent medical school for FAU was founded. He expertly charted the waters and navigated FAU through the complex legislative process that ultimately resulted in the State of Florida's decision to establish the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Dr. Friedland guided the College through the infancy of building a program - from staffing, through the development of a very innovative curriculum, to populating the inaugural class of medical students in August 2011. After four years, this resulted in 100 percent residency matches for these trailblazing pioneers, as well as all of the subsequent classes. This is quite an accomplishment for a new medical school and a true testament to Dr. Friedland and his commitment to building an outstanding program. Dr. Friedland will always be remembered for all of his accomplishments, but most importantly, as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and cherished friend.

I was an Internal Medicine resident at St. Vincent´s Medical Center when Dr. Friedland first arrived there. He wanted to elevate the level of medical care and residency training, which was a change of the status quo but ultimately was beneficial.
I am sorry he died already, I would thank him.

I am so sorry to hear that Dr. Friedland passed away. I was one of his residents from 1988 to 1991, while he was director of the Internal Medicine Residency at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT. The biggest chewing out I got in my career was from him and I owe him a debt of gratitude for it. He made me better and he knew it. I became Chief Resident in my last year and before I finished he gifted me a beautiful pen that I still use today. He touched countless lives as a doctor, as a teacher and as a role model. I'm proud to have been one of them.
