Michael Hall Obituary

Michael Hall, co-founder and artistic director (1975-2009), of Caldwell Theatre Company in Boca Raton, FL, died Thursday, June 15, 2017, from complications of pancreatic cancer. He was 77 years old. Closely involved with the arts all his life, Hall, after a long and prolific directing career at other theatres, in 1975 co-founded the Caldwell (named for Rubbermaid founder James R. Caldwell) in partnership with the late Frank Bennett, with a view to developing a professional regional theatre to serve Boca Raton and South Florida audiences. Dubbed by some in its early days "the hoop-skirt theatre" for its meticulously-crafted productions of such classic period plays as The Heiress and The Barretts of Wimpole Street, the Caldwell's true identity quickly asserted itself with presentations of dramas, comedies, and musicals that also included new works and that celebrated the human condition in all its diversity. Hall's efforts and dedication were rewarded, as the Caldwell rose in the estimation of audiences and critics alike and as its reputation spread among the theatre community nationwide with acclaimed productions of such varied offerings as Bent, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Gross Indecency, Beyond Therapy, The Normal Heart, Doubt, Falsettoland, Papa (with Len Cariou), Other People's Money, The Laramie Project, and Oh, Coward! (with Beth Fowler), to list only a few, thus further raising the Caldwell's profile and proving that South Florida had a serious theatre-going audience. As a result, the Caldwell achieved the coveted designation of State Theater of Florida, and Hall, his creative teams and his actors and productions won more than seventy-five Carbonell Awards. Hall maintained a keen interest in the education potential of theatre, offering in-house classes for young people and, in addition to the regular performances at the Caldwell, launching Theater For Schools, a program that for many years served to introduce middle and high school students to live theatre at special morning performances of Caldwell's productions. An offshoot of Hall's interest in theatre education and of his close connection with his roots was his partnering in recent years with the Hurry Hill Maple Farm and Museum in Edinboro, PA, for readings from Miracles on Maple Hill, the Newbery Medal winning book for young readers by Virginia Sorensen, a resident of Edinboro during Hall's formative years. He considered Sorensen a mentor, and she was instrumental in his gaining admission to college by permitting him to adapt her book, Plain Girl, into a play that he submitted as part of his college application. Not long before his death, Hall spoke at two Sorensen-related literary events: the first recognized maple sugarhouses in rural Pennsylvania and Miracles on Maple Hill and the second honored the Erie County Bookmobile and Sorensen's Curious Missy, about a rural Alabama bookmobile. After retiring in 2009, Hall indulged his other passions, among them travel and photography, which he combined in his blog, www.bullinthehallway.com. He also wrote extensively, producing an entertaining two-volume history of the Caldwell with an abundance of photographs that was published privately for his friends, family and Caldwell colleagues and associates. A reserved man for the most part, in his personal life Hall shone in social settings in the company of friends at his home for drinks, dinners and pool parties. He was an expert raconteur, with a fund of amusing, touching, and occasionally bizarre theatre anecdotes from his long career, and while some may not always have been G-rated, all were unfailingly diverting. Michael Hall was the only child of Dorothy (Helmer) and Carl Hall and spent his youth in Rock Island, IL, and Edinboro, PA, before earning his bachelor's degree from the School of Drama at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) and his master's degree from the University of Florida. He is survived by cousins Judy (Culbertson) and Lou Mundt of Avon Park, FL; Gail (Culbertson) and Larry Bennett of Morganton, GA; Thomas and Linda Culbertson of Lake Placid, FL; Kenneth and Jan Sproul of Hanson, AR; and a large and loving circle of friends and Caldwell artists. In deference to Mr. Hall's wishes, no services were held, but donations, if desired, can be made to a local theatre, museum, library or other arts organization in his memory.

Michael's contribution to the arts and culture here in South Florida deserves to be celebrated and honored. The Caldwell was like one big extended family and always felt like home.

Michael's legacy will last forever in Edinboro Pennsylvania, his hometown. Michael wrote three reader's theater plays based on Virginia Sorensen's Newbery book" Miracles on Maple Hill." His first play "Annie-Get-Your-Gun" can be seen on hurryhillfarm.org. See him at his best telling the audience about the school nurse, Anne Bieler (aka Annie-Get-Your-Gun") who thwarted his Valentine's Day debut directing career in grade two. We loved Michael, we will always miss him and we will always know the joy he brings to those who perform and see his work in "Miracles on Maple Hill."

Michael, thank you for being my teacher and friend and for fueling my passion for theater, art and the things that really matter. Your legacy is not only in the countless works of art you created but in the lifelong friendships you made a priority, and the students and actors you inspired, and the audiences you enlightened and educated. Your reach is vast, and your story continues. Thank you, Chief!

Michael gave me my first break, and continued to offer me wonderful opportunities to work thereafter. His quiet, sure direction gave me so much freedom and gentle guidance. I will always treasure one particular lunch we had together when he opened up and told some wonderful theatre stories. Working in Florida with Michael and the amazing people he assembled gave me the best memories, and best friends, of my life. So very sad to hear of his passing; I send my condolences to his family, and to the family he made.

Not only did Michael Hall bring culture and great theatre to South Florida, he was a savior to hundreds and hundreds of actors. He gave us work. He took a chance on people. He believed in us. The Caldwell Theatre was a magical place not just onstage. I will always be grateful to him.

I owe more to Michael Hall than I can ever possibly put into words. He provided me and Kim - and so many others - an artistic home with few restrictions; a place where we could explore the art we loved with like-minded folks in a "well-stocked" venue. I literally learned to direct theatre there. Michael would simply say, "You do this one." And I had to figure it out. I'm still doing that thanks to the many opportunities he gave me at the Caldwell. Thank you & God Speed, Chief!

The world was a better place with Michael in it. He was a great travel companion and we shared in his joy of travel. He had a knack for organizing and he made interesting travel destinations while making friends along the way. His photography was beautiful and he was a great teacher. We loved listening and learning about his love of the theater. He had a gusto for life, and the arts and he was a genuine person with a heart of gold. We were honored to be introduced to his theater family. We will always remember you Michael.

Michael, thank you for the Caldwell; a jewel of South Florida Theatre. I was always honored to find myself there. You inspired this actor to settle in the Sunshine State. You will be sorely missed.

Through the auspices of Barbara Bradshaw, Michael cast me in Murder Among Friends. Later, he offered me major roles in The Cherry Orchard and The Dark At the Top of the Stairs. His direction was always natural, stress-free, and effective. I remember him once discussing how one should appreciate the humor of a situation on stage even though your character cannot acknowledge it. I had told him earlier about a performance of Dark at the Top of the Stairs when I had descended the stairs in a dark, contemplative mood and stared into a mirror while slowly running my hand through my hair. From the front row, I could hear one of the matinee ladies loudly whispering to her friend, "It's... a... wig!"
It wasn't.

In a Christmas letter from Michael dated December twentieth, nineteen seventy seven Michael wrote to me, Got your Christmas theatre letter. Wouldn't you know that you had been there the bomb threat night for IGUANA. So was a critic friend of mine from Atlanta who drove all the way down to see the show. Fortunately, he saw the matinee the next day. We found out that it was some crazy person who had a grudge against the cafeteria.
Just one of the many stories from the very early days of the Caldwell Playhouse when still at the College of Boca Raton,FL on Military Trail.
