Daughters Sarah and Mary Greiner invite you to celebrate the life of their Dad, John Greiner.
John Allen Greiner of Rural Retreat, Va., passed away last August after a battle with brain cancer. Several generations of the Greiner family left a mark on the town of Wytheville and surrounding areas, and John followed suit. Whether he was teaching students how to play chess and Go, volunteering at the Agape food pantry, or telling the best (worst) "Dad-jokes" around, John made sure anyone that crossed his path learned something new and left with a smile. Please stop by a casual gathering to share your favorite memory of John as we honor and appreciate his life.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, May 29, 2022, from 2 until 5 p.m. at The Rural Retreat Depot, 105 W. Railroad Avenue. Come as you are. Light refreshments will be served.

John and I were in the 1965 graduating class of CHHS together as well as members of the same youth church group for a number of years. We reconnected in PA just a few years ago for a couple days of jazz and futile attempts to teach me the rudiments of GO.
I just happened to notice this post of his obituary when trying to locate him to ask if he would be attending our 60th cass reunion in September.
We were friends, and to know he is no longer in this world makes each of my remaining days a bit less bright, and I'm sorry for the loss to your family and community as we all move forward without his gentleness and smile.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have just learned of John's death. I have great memories of your dad, both work related and as a bicycling buddy. He was a kind, patient and delightful soul.

John and I were roommates at Stony Brook University in Long Island N.Y in 1966. After he got out of the Army, he and Linda were at my wedding to Marcia in 1971 in Smithtown, NY. John taught me about Go. Then we lost touch. Marcia and I are still married and live in Florida.
Tonight, I was playing with my new phonograph turntable. I pulled out Simon and Garfunkel´s "Sounds of Silence". I noticed that the initials JAG were written in faded marker on the album cover. It took me a fewer more minutes, but I got it; I had John´s record album. A few more minutes on Google confirmed that I was too late. My friend John has passed. But maybe he left me a message. Anyway, Linda, if you want John´s record back, send me a message at [email protected]. Good night.

John was a regular at the national Go tournament every summer. He gave off a warming vibe to all and was very kind to me and my wife. I speak for many when I say he will be missed.
