Mark Munsey Obituary

Mark Munsey

September 12, 1948 - August 2, 2024

Mark Carlton Munsey, age 75, of Wytheville, VA, passed away Friday, August 2, 2024. He was born September 12, 1948, in Galena, IL, the son of the late Louis Carlton Munsey and Irma Irene Munsey.

Mark was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. He was awarded the U.S. Army Military Merit Medal. He was inspired by his mother to follow in her footsteps by serving in the United States Army. She was a U.S. Army flight nurse in Europe during WWII.

Mark was involved with many organizations in the Town of Wytheville and Wythe County. He served on the Wytheville Board of Supervisors, representing West Wytheville. He was involved many years with the Lion's Club Jaycee's, volunteering at different events including the annual Carnival.

Mark's research and hard work was instrumental in bringing the Hot Air Balloons to Wytheville's Chautauqua Festival, which brings much pride to the town. We will always remember his love and excitement with the balloons and balloonists, bringing joy to the people of our town.

Mark was also known for his time working and volunteering as an auctioneer on different occasions. He also attended group homes for disabled children and adults for many years, arriving as Santa for numerous Christmas events.

Mark spent much time working tirelessly with his wife, Nancy, and others to bring the Expo Center to Wythe County, a place for local events to be held for many years to come.

He was Nancy's rock, her constant love; they were always together. He was their daughter's most fierce support, protector and critic, and taught her the importance of truth, strength, honor and loyalty.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Munsey; his daughter, Catherine Granai of Johnson City, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and John Allen of Laurens, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Diann Munsey of Cedar Bluff, VA; two grandchildren, Addyson and Anna Grace Granai.

A Celebration of his life will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2024, at Barnett Funeral Home with Pastor Brett McCleary officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. service time.
