Roy Compton
January 2, 1932 - August 3, 2021
Humility is active patience. Humbleness is love in service. And gentleness is the quiet strength that wraps up all the perfect qualities of a Christian husband and father into a role model with a servant's heart. Roy Compton personified the Christian husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with an unending amount of love for his family.
The Lord called Roy to Himself Tuesday evening, August 3, 2021, two days shy of his 71st wedding anniversary. Loving family was by his side. He was 89. Born on January 2, 1932, in Swords Creek, Virginia, to parents, Ellis and Artie (Corns) Compton, Roy met a young lady in the best of all possible places, at church. He married Charlotte A. Ball on August 5, 1950, in the Methodist minister's parsonage in Tazewell, Virginia, and they later moved their family to the Mansfield area in 1959 when Roy accepted a position with General Motors. He worked with GM in Ontario maintaining welding equipment for 41 years, retiring in 2000. He remained a member of the UAW and the GM Retirees Club. Roy was devoted to Charlotte, and for the past several years devoted all of his attention to her care. He attended Berean Baptist Church, and had formerly been a member of Lexington Church of Christ, where he served as deacon and trustee. In the 1960s he served on the Lexington Police Auxiliary.
He will be remembered as a hard worker who could fix anything – a real Jack-of-all-trades. And as a man who was completely devoted to his family – his eyes would light up when he was around those grandchildren, and later those precious great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte (Ball) Compton; their sons, Sonny (Susan) Compton of Bellville, Dr. Rick (Kris) Compton of Wilmington, Richard (Dianna) Compton of Mansfield, and David (Melissa) Compton of Mansfield; grandchildren, Patrick Compton, Ryan Compton, John Compton, Alex (Heather) Compton, Mike (Amy) Compton, Brittany Compton, Adam Compton, and Aiden Compton; great-grandchildren, Emma, Luke, Hendrix, and Thatcher; sisters, Helen Arbutus Wolf of Mansfield, Eunice Keen Vance of Lexington, and Annie Evelyn Sesco of Mansfield; brother-in-law, Sterling (Clauda) Ball of Kernersville, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Gladys Bolding and Edith Meadows.
The Compton family received friends Friday, August 6, 2021, from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service was held Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 11 a.m. Pastor Jim Berry officiated. Burial followed in Lexington Cemetery.
