Alfred Chiles Obituary

Alfred B. Chiles, Jr.

Bartow - On Wednesday, June 26, 2013, Alfred B. Chiles, Jr., 83, went to his final resting place to be with his Lord and Savior. Alfred was born December 10, 1929, in Lakeland, Florida, the son of Alfred B. and Annie Cargil Mayes Chiles. He was an Eagle Scout and a 1947 graduate of Lakeland High School, before going on to the University of Florida to obtain his degree in Pharmacy in 1952. While at school in Gainesville, Alfred also married the love of his life, Elizabeth Coe, in 1951. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity while in school and eventually became a member of the fraternity's Gold Circle. Alfred's work as a Pharmacist took him from Lakeland to Sarasota, St. Petersburg and Sanford, before ending up in Bartow in 1960, where he became Pharmacist/Co-owner at Chiles' Liggett Drug Store for the next 20 years with Elizabeth. After closing that store in 1980, Alfred finished his career working as a Pharmacist/Consultant for several nursing homes and worked for a number of years at K-Mart until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartow since 1960, where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon. Alfred was a Mason since 1957, was a Commander in the York Rite, and was conferred a 32nd degree membership of the Scottish Rite. He was proud of being a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years, first joining the Bartow Lions Club in 1965, and then becoming a member of the Dixieland Lions in Lakeland. He was also a lifetime member of the Polk County Historical Society. He was a voracious reader, loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a lifelong Gator fan and birdwatcher, with memberships in the Florida Trail Association and the Audubon Society Lake Region. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Larry, and his wife, Elizabeth. He is survived by two sons -- Alfred B. Chiles, III of Metairie, Louisiana (Kathy) and Harry F. Chiles of Tallahassee, Florida (Mary); five grandchildren -- Courtney and Frazier Chiles, Kati Brown (Matthew), Lauren Baxter (Chris), and Rachael Trygg; six great grandchildren; and his brother, Joe W. Chiles of Louisville, Kentucky (Louise). A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, 410 East Church Street, Bartow. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the First Baptist Church or to the charity of your choice.
