Alice Grow Obituary

Alice Barron Grow

Tallahassee - Alice Barron Grow died peacefully in her sleep in Tallahassee Saturday, December 8, 2018.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church with a reception immediately following in Moor Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in memory of Alice be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 120 W. Park Avenue, Tallahassee, FL 32301.

She was born Alice Muse Barron on November 26, 1941, in Orlando, to William Worth and Frances Bell Barron. Alice was valedictorian at Cocoa High School and graduated magna cum laude from Florida State University where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, where she worked for several years in adult ministries. She also worked at the FSU Department of Economics. She devoted much of her adult life to raising her three grateful children.

Alice was admired for being intellectual, outspoken, thoughtful, and unique. She could mount an imaginary stage with a flowery bow in her hair and deliver a spontaneous spiritual commentary that captured her personal depth and delight in life. She was appreciated for her broad and tolerant understanding of human nature.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, William A. (Bill) Grow Jr.; one sister, Ann Blakey; one brother, Worth Barron; one daughter, Allison Grow of Gainesville, FL; two sons, William Barron (Barry) Grow of Orlando, FL, and Justin Marshall Grow of Greenville, SC; seven grandchildren, many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Worth and Frances Bell Barron.

Rocky Bevis of Bevis Funeral Home (850/385-2193 or www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the Grow family with their arrangements.

I only knew Alice as a girl from the old neighborhood in Rockledge, at Cocoa High and some at FSU. But, I especially recall one long Greyhound ride to Tallahassee after a holiday break at home. We were seatmates for the trip and I remember discovering a person of great intellect and charm. We talked for hours and she managed to convert a tiresome episode into a very happy experience. I am certain Alice became a fine woman who will be greatly missed by her family. I hope you can take comfort from the brightness she must surely have brought to your lives. My condolences, Randy Revels
