Betty Davis Obituary

Betty Rae Davis

Betty Rae Davis, age 91, a beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a loving friend to so many passed away peacefully at home in Tallahassee, FL. She was surrounded by her loving family as she passed from this world into Heaven, March 29, 2014. While she battled Alzheimer's disease for over a decade, her sweet spirit always remained. Everyone that knew her will remember Betty's devotion to and love for God, family and friends. She will always be the strength of our family.

Betty was born in Pensacola, Florida. Her father was employed by the Louisville-Nashville Railroad Line, which afforded Betty the opportunity to live in multiple cities such as Pensacola, FL; Louisville and Paris, KY; and Birmingham, AL. It was there she met her best friend, Juanita Davis while attending Wheeler Business College. Soon thereafter, she was introduced to Juanita's brother Eugene, who had just returned from World War ll. They quickly fell in love and were married March 23, 1946. Eugene and Betty moved to Florida in 1946 and eventually settled permanently in Tallahassee.

She was employed for 33 years with the Florida State University History Department as an Executive Secretary. She made many true and lifelong friends during this period. It was indeed a job that she loved as she was able to interact on a daily basis with many students and faculty that she admired. This deep friendship was highly valued by Betty and she cherished time spent with her former co-workers after retirement.

Betty attended Seminole Baptist for 56 years and faithfully served in the Church nursery for many of these years. She loved nurturing the babies and toddlers and served long enough to see many of them as adults with their own children and grandchildren. She lived her faith through her actions, words and deeds.

She is survived by a son, Donald (Tina) of Tallahassee, FL; a daughter Sue Anne Poppell (Ed) of Quincy, FL; 9 grandchildren, Jonathan (Mandie), Kevin (Melissa), Christopher, Aaron Davis; Sabrina Sanders Parrish; Wendy Sanders; Darby, Landon and Haley Rae Davis. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren Dakota DeYent, Sarah Cheatham, Nakiah and Jaleha Lockwood, Caleb Parrish, and Lily Davis. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews as well as her sister-in-law Juanita Davis (Dallas, TX). Betty was the youngest daughter of the John and Angeline Yent Ashbrook, and is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 50 years, Eugene Henry Davis and their son John Harrison Davis, as well as her sister Anne Williamson.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 PM, Culley's Meadow Wood Timberlane Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 10:30 AM, Seminole Baptist Church, 3330 Mission Road, Tallahassee, FL. Interment will immediately follow at Tallahassee Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Betty to the Fellowship Hall Building Fund of Seminole Baptist Church and/or The Alzheimer's Project at 301 West Tharpe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303.

Dear Don, I just read this beautiful tribute to your Mother. I am so grateful that I had the chance to meet her a few years ago. I loved her instantly. She glowed with love and had a constant sweet smile on her face. She definitely let us see Jesus through her. Blessings to you dear friend.

Ms. Betty was one Great Lady. The earth's loss is the Lords gain. I for one can see her and Gene together again. Such a perfect couple. Wish I could have told her in person what a wonderful lady she was, and still is, even in death.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Betty Rae Davis was just about the sweetest person I've ever known! Her love for her family and God was tremendous and expressive in so many ways. That sweetness was ever present, and even in the throes of Alzheimer's, that sweet spirit that was her's shone through!

So many fun times I've enjoyed with Betty! I'm still telling stories that came out of her life loving sense of humor! I will miss you Betty but we will always have Arizona;)))

I shall always love you Betty Rae Davis and I know that you are forever in His Loving Arms. God has richly blessed you and YOU have richly blessed us all in return.
