Carol Schwarz Obituary

Carol Schwarz

Tallahassee - Carol Ruth Schwarz, 63, died too young on November 17th, 2020. Transplanted from Trenton, NJ as a preschooler, Carol grew up in Key Biscayne, where her lifelong love of the water began. Following graduation from Coral Gables HS Carol moved to Tallahassee to attend FSU. She fell in love with this area and never left.

Carol was passionate about many things, from local politics to the environment. She was most passionate about the issue of clean water, which she referred to as "Blue Gold." She loved being around water and spent countless hours hiking, kayaking, and photographing around the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge and Wakulla Springs, as well as other rivers and springs all over the state. She was the #1 supporter of the "Saving Wakulla Springs" Overland Tour, and persuaded numerous community and political leaders to learn first hand about water quality issues by taking the tour. Riversink was her special place.

Carol's jobs, vocations, and avocations reflected the wide variety of her interests. Her areas of employment ranged from mental health and probation, to the Florida legislature and Department of Revenue. She was also a licensed massage therapist, taught swimming, was certified in Usui Reiki and was active in the Reiki community for many years. Carol loved music and participated in the Velma Frye and co-op singing groups, and was an avid supporter of the FSU School of Music.

As a beloved member of United Church in Tallahassee, Carol added her voice to the choir and special vocal ensembles. Her passion for social justice and environmental issues led her to become a key member of the congregation's Climate Change Task Force. She took a special interest in introducing high school and college youth to the beauty of our natural environment.

Carol's multitude of friends were as diverse as her interests. It is not an exaggeration to say that wherever she went, from hiking trails to commission chambers, she ran into and was warmly greeted by someone she knew. Carol treated everyone the same - politician or panhandler, she was respectful, genuinely interested, and passionately caring.

We are poorer for her loss, but blessed by her memory.

Carol is survived by her sister, Barbara Krieger, nephew, Matthew Krieger, both of Tampa, and niece, Heidi Krieger of Atlanta. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Dorothy Schwarz..

Yesterday, twelve of us in the local canoe club gathered to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner together. As I listened to the animated chatter, I found myself thinking of friends I had lost. Carol was one of those friends. I know she had her down moments but every time I saw her, she was brimming with life and excitement. She had given up paddling long before her death but I still miss her when a group of us get together for a party or a paddling event. She had an impact on all of us.

I have thought of Carol often during the past year. She was such a vibrant person, so full of good humor and bubbling with life that it's hard to imagine that all that could vanish in an instance.

I did not know her extremely well but she was always nice and friendly to me. 63 is too young to die. I know she is missed.

Arthur Carlson introduced Carol and me. I loved her for her vibrancy and cannot imagine her anyway but full of life. I am playing the songs she loved and thinking about the good old days: “So sad, so fresh, the days that are no more” (Alfred Tennyson).

I always think of Carol when I hear "This Must Be the Place" by Talking Heads. I hope where she is now looks a lot like the Miccosukee Land Co-op.

My heart is broken knowing Carol is gone. She was a great friend. Carol was a volunteer waterfront steward on the Apalachicola River for The Nature Conservancy when I worked there years ago. She and Clarissa Mickle hit it off and became like Laverne and Shirley on the water with their funny adventures. We've been friends since. Carol had a spirituality I could never fathom. She was fun loving, thoughtful, caring. She brought so much to the table, putting her values into action with the causes she supported. She introduced me to fabulous musical performances at FSU. So disappointed I missed her memorial service. We lost a wonderful person and a dear friend.

Remembering her joyfulness, her dedication, her smile. And reading her obit, she was much more diversified than I had imagined. She lived a full life, but died too soon.

Carol's birthday request a few years ago in my singing circles was "Bird On the Wire" by Leonard Cohen. The line that repeats in every verse is "I have tried in my way to be free." Carol tried in her way to be free.

Always fun to be with on the water in a kayak--good humor and a kind spirit. She will be missed.
