Charles Jones Obituary

Pastor Charles Richard Jones

Monticello - (June 20, 1938 - December 24, 2020)

Charles Richard Jones went to his heavenly home of rest to live forever with his Lord and Savior after a sudden death from a stroke and brain bleed on Christmas Eve. He was dearly loved by all his family and friends.

"Pastor Richard" (as he was commonly known by many) is survived by his wife Gail Christy-Jones for 30 years, his son Mike Jones (Monica), daughter Elaine Jones Cawvey (Mark), brother in-law Ron Drake, grandson Mikell Reid (Lisa), great grandchildren Summer and Mikell II, his sister Linda Smysor, sister-in-law Joyce Ann Jones. He was "Uncle Dickie" to numerous nephews and nieces and many other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Carolyn Jones Poole, brothers Clark Jones and Fred Jones (Jeanne), sister Joyce (Walter Jacobs), father Rannell Luther Jones and mother Bessie Jewel Minix Jones.

Richard graduated with a 4 year degree in Social Work from Florida State University and 5 year certificate from Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

He served faithfully 44 years as a full time and part time Local Pastor of the Florida Conference United Methodist Church in the following United Methodist Churches: Bethel, Lake City; Micanopy Circuit, first, Deltona; First, Brandon; Waukeenah/Wacissa Charge; Wakulla, East Point/St. George Island Charge; Lamont; Waukeenah, Woodville, Pisgah, Sardis, and Forest Hills. After full retirement, he served as Pastor Emeritus of the Waukeenah United Methodist Church until his death.

He loved to preach about his Lord and Savior and never met a stranger. He enjoyed time with family, travel with his wife and friends, preaching, and singing and listening to Gospel Music.

He was proud to serve his country in the Navy for 4 years full time active duty on the USS Charles P. Cecil and the Naval Reserve for 8 years. He currently served as Chaplain of the American Legion Post 49 in Monticello.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Waukeenah United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to service. Burial will follow at Waukeenah Cemetery.

Dear Gail, Elaine & Mike,

Words cannot express the true measure of loss felt by all upon the passing of your dear loved one, Richard. I have no doubt that every trumpet of Heaven was playing a glorious hymn to greet Richard upon his arrival to his eternal home with our Lord.

When I first met Richard, I was but a young boy. I am grateful to have returned home to North Florida in time to have conversations with him as an adult so that I could truly appreciate the true Christ-like dimensions of his personality. He was a very kind man to me and through listening to his sermons and conversing with him privately, his life example and passion about his beliefs in the Grace of Jesus are very special memories that I will forever cherish in my heart. He shared the Good News and ministered to the needs of so many as a most faithful and humble Shepherd. His gentle spirit and generous friendship will always be for what is remembered. May God’s protection and love surround all of you and bring comfort to your sorrows during this time of loss and transition.

Love,
Charles.

Dear Gail and family,
My deepest condolences. I have fond memories of Pastor Richard as a guest preacher at John Wesley UMC giving thoughtful, passionate sermons yet with a gentle and kind spirit. We always listened closely to his wisdom and it was a pleasure to be able to have both of you with us at those times. You and your family are and will be in my prayers.
