James Barge Obituary

Dr. James Barge

Dr. James Barge, 87 of Tallahassee, FL, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016. He was born in DeFuniak Springs, FL to the late Elbert and Effie Barge. He was educated in the public school system of Walton County, FL. and was drafted into the United States Armed Forces during the Korean conflict where he served as a training specialist for two years. He later graduated from Florida A&M University, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He received his Ph. D. in Vocational Education Administration from Florida State University.

Dr. Barge returned to Walton County earlier in his career, where he taught Elementary Education and later taught Vocational Agriculture. In 1969, he and his family moved to Tallahassee, where he worked with the Florida Department of Education as a Bureau Chief.

Dr. Barge was called to share his expertise nationally. He has given oral testimony on vocational education to the United States House of Representatives and written testimony to the United States Senate. In addition he also was recruited for a Strategic Planning Seminar "Leadership in the New Age of Strategic Advantage" conducted by Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge Technology Group. Upon his retirement, he returned to his passion, teaching. He joined Florida A&M University as an adjunct professor and strategic planning consultant for the College of Agriculture and Food Sciences.

His motto was "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The life of service is the life that counts."

Dr. James A. Barge was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Washington Barge. To this union were born three daughters: Janice Barge Clarke (J.L. Michael) of St. Petersburg, Cheryl Barge-Seabrooks (Jesse) and Linda Barge-Miles both of Tallahassee; he is also survived by four sisters: Barbara Gipson, Ruth Brown, Vera Randolph and Gloria Riley (Paul), four brothers: Jesse (Rose), Elbert, Jr. (Juliaette), and J.D. "Hayward", and seven grandchildren: Jazmine Clarke, Lorian Miles, Courtney Williams, Erin Williams, Justin Clarke, Khristin Miles and Korbin Miles.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 (Noon) Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 501 West Orange Avenue, Tallahassee, Florida. The family will receive friends and host a viewing on April 8, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church.
