John Griffith Obituary

John Paul Griffith, Jr. (Jack)

John Paul Griffith, Jr. (Jack) passed away on February 4, 2014 surrounded by his family. Jack was born on June 26, 1953 in Gainesville, Florida, to John Paul and Georgia Edith Collins Griffith. He grew up in Marianna and attended the University of West Florida, University of Florida and Florida State University. Jack worked as an Engineer for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection since 1992 and was passionate about his work.

Jack's greatest and proudest accomplishment was his son Boyce. He was proud of his musical talent and ability. Jack loved music, art, making art, films and being in the outdoors. Jack especially enjoyed hiking, canoeing and traveling. Jack also enjoyed fixing stuff, rebuilding and repairing things. Many will remember Jack for his annual birthday parties at Ocheessee Pond in Jackson County, his sense of humor, his keen intellect, his individuality and his kindness.

Jack was preceded in death by his father J. Paul Griffith. Jack is survived by his wife, Julie of almost twenty-seven years and his son Boyce. Jack is also survived by his mother, Edith Griffith, his brothers Danny Cooksey (Charlotte) and Floyd Griffith (Roberta), his sisters Georgia Ann Sharpe (Richard) and Daisy Margaret Hayes (Roger) and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Friends will be received 4-5pm Saturday at the Culley's Meadowwood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel where a Celebration of Jack's Life will be held that afternon at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jack's honor to the charity of your choice.

I only had the chance to meet Jack at the Biennial Workshops he held at the District offices. I just saw him on January 14th at the LQG training in Tampa. He was ready to do report training at all of the other District offices. I know from speaking with the generators that he was always available to help. My sympathies go out to you.

First, I want to send my condolence to Jack's family & friends. Today I heard the news of his passing. I am still shocked and without many words. I wanted to speak to him today about a biennial reporting issue. Jack has always helped me with these reports, for years. He was always patient, and took timeout of his busy schedule to make sure I was helped. He was passionate about his job, and cared enough to extend his knowledge. Thank you Jack for caring enough to help me and many others too. Peace to his family during their time of grief. You are missed by many.

Julie and Boyce, just learning in the last couple of days regarding Jack's passing. We were shocked and saddened. Although our relationship with each of you has only been a year or so in length, the times we have shared were ones of enjoyment and appreciation. My condolences to all of Jack's family, friends, and colleagues. He will be missed terribly, particularly during biennial reporting years. His vision, knowledge, and experience in developing and maintaining the reporting software all these years is unmatched and helped make the whole process better. He was always open to suggestions and improvements; a pleasure to work with.

I was devastated by the news that Jack passed away. Jack has been a national treasure ever since he joined FL DEP in 1992. I'll never forget the first time I met Jack in Dallas, TX at the National RCRIS Conference. Jack was proudly demonstrating his Foxpro software that processed the EPA Hazardous Waste Biennial Report (BR) data on a PC. The system was portable, easy to install, good and fast. Jack was earnest, modest and meticulous in every detail. Over the years EPA became more and more dependent on Jack's marvelous work and insight in how the BR data, the regulations and the processing software meshed. Jack was always professional and quick to return phone calls and actively participated in policy decision making.

One can honestly say that Jack was irreplaceable. It is a real shame that Jack will never see what the new EPA Hazardous Waste eManifest System, which will replace the Biennial Report, looks like.

My heart goes out to Jack's wife, family and friends. I empathize with the hole that Jack's absence has left you with. I and our fellow work group members (Paula Canter, Cpan Lee, Hope Wright and Laura Lopez) will really miss Jack Griffith as a colleague and friend.

Jack and I first met as undergraduate students at the University of West Florida over 40 years ago. We have been friends ever since. He was truly a unique individual and he will be missed by all those that had the pleasure of knowing him.

I always appreciate Jack's willingness and kindness to share his abundant program and system knowledge without any reservation. With his rich institutional knowledge, Jack was one of very few persons I immediately thought about to get advice/thoughts for RCRA and Biennial Report issues. My deepest condolences go to Jack's family.

This is such terribly sad news. I worked with Jack for many years at DEP, he was one of the good guys. We shared being Leon Band parents, he was so very very proud of Boyce and enjoyed so much being a part of the Leon Band Supporters.
He was a quiet, incredibly competent person, and will be sorely missed.

My heart goes out to your family on the loss of such a great man. He was a joy to work with for almost 20 years. His passing is a great loss to the entire National RCRA environmental regulatory community, not just the State of Florida. May God hold you in his arms to heal your pain.

Jack will be greatly missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was always a great help with any Biennial Report and RCRA issues. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Jack and I had the sometimes onerous distinction of being the ol' man and ol' lady of the national Biennial Report program. US EPA tapped us as a source of institutional knowledge. Jack directly impacted the national program in many ways over the 20+ years I worked with him. We agreed about 85% of the time; when we didn't it got interesting because we were both passionate about it. He represented FL DEP well and wore his logo shirt to meetings. Big shoes to fill. I know he was proud of Boyce from the way he talked about him. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Jack's passing. I worked with him on many projects and he was one of the finest people I know. He was funny and smart and when it came to the EPA data system he was one of the best.
Jack will be missed by us all.

Jack was the nicest guy. I worked with him for 16 years on RCRAInfo at EPA. He was always so agreeable in our conversations until somebody would come along and make him contradict himself....hahaha. He was always willing to help in any way he could and was always willing to listen to everyone. He will be missed. My deepest and sincerest condolences!

We in the RCRA community will miss him greatly. His Biennial Report software made a lot of our and our generators reporting duties a whole lot easier.

God Bless.

I have known Jack for nearly 20 years. I work for a contractor and am heavily involved in the Biennial Report for which he wrote software that many states use. Jack was a tremendous person with a wonderful outlook on life. I want to extend my condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.
