I was completely out of the loop when Mark passed. Mark Pettijohn (and Phil) were known by all us kids in the neighborhood. My brothers were best of friends and Mark was in and out of our house. Mark (and Phil) were initiators, (sometimes instigators :), and the fun would begin. We all surfed, swam, and fished the local waters. The whole Pettijohn family were leaders at whatever they did. They were all very sociable people. Mark did have a sweet spirit. He was high energy and I do remember his smile! This picture captures him perfectly! He was all boyish play and pranks, yet I will never forget when he was probably around 19 or so, he showed up at our house around Christmas time with a Homemade pie for the family that he made himself! It was the best Pumpkin Pie ever! He humbly shared that is was really an easy recipe. His actions were so grand for a young man and it made the pie just as great. I have made that pie Every Year for Thanksgiving time ever since. I always smile inside with a "Thanks for the recipe, Mark", and every time I put it together, his memory is somehow in the mix. I am so glad he had a loving family of his own. Hope to see you all together for the great Family Reunion on the other side in Heaven.

Mark was about 12 when I began Sat outings in search of good waves. He, some of his friends, and the boards they had bought from my shop must have made the trip from Lauderdale to Boca least 100 times. What a great little guy he was. Polite, caring, and a dedicated surfer even when we found no surf. .
I trusted Mark so much that he was the first baby sitter I had for my 3 month old daughter. ironically, I "baby sat" Mark and Phil for a week while their parents cruised the Bahamas.
As I look at the posted photograph I see the kindness in his eyes and smile. I know that your family misses him. I send my deepest sympathies for your loss.

Mark and I cruised through much of the Fort Lauderdale waterways in his Boston Whaler, and as I recall a Scott 60 outboard motor. Today I thought of Mark and googled. I read about his parents and brothers passing, also. I remember fondly those days on the water and my sincere sympathy to the family.

Fred & Jeannie,
I just this evening learned that we lost Mark. One of my very best friends throughout the 1980's and 90's. Mark was someone I frequently turned to for advice, for common sense solutions, for ways to navigate the construction tasks we both ran into. Your Dad had a way of becoming expert in the things that interested him, he had to know how to make things work, and how to keep them working when they broke. The last time I talked to Mark we had a slight opportunity to cross paths but didn't happen, and I wish it had. I was overjoyed to hear from him and wish he hadn't moved because it seemed to put space between our friendship.
Just want you to know that Mark is someone I frequently compliment for his expertise, and ways of doing things. I wish he and I had stayed as close as we were. He is and will always be one of my very good friends
Rest in Peace Mark
Your Friend Always

My dad had this smile that could light up a room. An aura about him that always let you knew that he was having a good time. A sense of love, with a seriousness that could only let you know that he cared. He was the best man I've ever known and I strive to keep his candle burning inside of me as I grow old. Love always, your Beanie.

Dear Delaney and Pettijohn Family: I worked with Mark for many years here at the City of Tallahassee Public Works. Only yesterday did I see his obituary and it made me cry instantly because Mark was very kind to me and I'll never forget that. Delaney, I can remember when God finally brought you, the love of his life, back into his life...he shared with me during that time that you were his whole reason for living and your very presence and love had changed his life completely. I can remember so clearly when he was feeling ill, then you came and instantly I saw a miracle in his health. True Love Does That. You're quite a lady Delaney and I'm so very sorry for your loss, but so thankful that God brought you two back together and that Mark had your love to the very last moments of life.

Little Brother Mark
Two brothers gone now. Life is too cruel. I will always remember your quick smile and kind heart. Those days seem so long ago now but our great adventures will always burn bright in my memory.
Goodbye old friend, God speed.

Mark was a colleague and friend. In addition to being smart & talented, Mark was a man of integrity; honest & fair. Mark was a good man and a good friend to me. It pains me to know that I will not see him again on this earth.
Take care buddy. I am glad to have spent some time with you. I will miss you.
