Martha Spivey Obituary

Martha Emily Crocker Spivey

Martha Emily Crocker Spivey (83) of Tallahassee, FL died on November 2nd, 2016. She was born in Suffolk, VA, December 7, 1932, to the late Henry Butler Crocker and Katherine Beamon West Crocker. After graduating from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1954, she married Robert Atwood Spivey, also of Suffolk, who survives.

Other survivors include their three children and spouses, Hope Crocker Spivey and Jeff Stephenson of Palmetto, FL, Matthew Lee and Lisa Applegate Spivey of Tallahassee, FL, and Paul Atwood and Cynthia Hicks Spivey of Palm Coast, FL, five grandchildren: Sarah Crocker Spivey Stephenson, James Fechet Stephenson, III, Robert Andrus Stephenson, Bradley Atwood Spivey and Lee Ann Spivey, nephews G. S. Hobbs, III and Ronald Atwood Spivey, nieces Katherine Cottingham Hobbs and Elizabeth Leigh Hobbs, three great nieces, Meredith Prince Harris, Martha Caitlin Prince Antinori, Sarah Rebecca Hoffman, Meredith Spivey Parks and Amanda Spivey Rogers and numerous other family members, especially the West family.

By way of comment, she excelled at the "little things", above all her relationships with family and friends. She was at home in church, including Sunday School, the Altar Guild, especially teaching with little children, and the Monday Night Group. Her jobs: secretary for Pitney Van Dusen at Union Seminary, Institute for Social Policy Studies, under Leo Sandon, she also worked as entertainment coordinator at R-MWC. Sabbatical years first in Germany and later in England. Recreation happily included tennis, swimming and bridge.

Above all, in family and friends she lived with an amazing capacity for grace and love.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 5th, 2016 at 10:30am at Deer Lake United Methodist Church. A burial service will be at a later time in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity. Todd Wahlquist with Bevis Funeral Home is assisting the family with their arrangements. 850-385-2193, www.bevisfh.com

A wonderful member of my church has passed away. Mrs. Martha Spivey was a lovely caring person and she always took time to come talk to me and ask me how I was doing. She was one of my biggest cheerleaders throughout the process of me earning my Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Every time she saw me she asked if I had earned it yet. More than that, she loved God, her family, and her church. I will miss her smiles and her hugs. I will miss her every day, but especially Sundays at the Lakes Cafe where she would always talk with me. My only regret is that I did not get to know her like others did. There are so many great people at the church who know my parents, but who I don't know that well, and I hope that I will get to know them better. Mrs. Spivey was one of them, but once I began to talk to her and get to know her, I realized how great and loving she was, and I hope to be able to get to know others in the church too. Mrs. Spivey, I will miss you very much. Thank you for always caring about me and taking time to get to know me. I know you are having a great time in Heaven.

Dear Dr. Spivey and family, I send my deepest sympathy on the loss of your beloved Martha. She was always so kind and gracious to me when I attended R-MWC and visited your welcoming home. She embodied the commandment to "love thy neighbor" and was one of the finest examples of this during my college years. Together, she and Dr. Spivey were a great team and role models for so many of us. May God be with her and all of you. Fondly, Susan Nowlin Schaller, formerly of Lynchburg, VA Class of 1981
