We knew Sergeant Flamer very well at Fairchild AFB, WA from 1968-72. He was a wonderful man who was assigned to the base Comptrollers office and then promoted to Base Sergeant Major - the highest ranking office on the base for a non-commissioned officer. There is so much to say about this man who was so good natured and wise beyond his military station. My wife Karen knew him well due to her civilian job in the Comptrollers office. I write this in August 2022 and we still talk about Dick and the impact he had on both of us at FAFB. We are thrilled to read that he received his Phd because it is fitting that he could and would achieve that excellence after his career in the US Air Force. Dr. Flamer, I salute you, sir. Capt. Barry Hanson.

August 24, 2012. Dear Arlene, I worked with Dick for several years when we both worked for the Comptroller at Fairchild AFB & later the Commander's office. I just found out today about Dick's passing and I'm just bereft! We feel so bad for all of you. He helped me raise Chuck & Charla from his office desk! I'd be in a meeting and the kids would call wanting something. He'd evaluate it and say yes or no. He was just my super, super friend! We hadn't been in touch for years but I still new he was "there"!. I knew he was in Florida at a school and talked to him there in the early 2000's. Time just goes too fast. I googled him today and found his obituary. I hope you get to read this someday and know how badly we miss him. I'm going to try to find you too. In the meantime, you have our most sincere sympathy and hope you find this someday. I talked to Roth Ashby in Spokane after I found Dick's obituary. He was stunned too. Love to you and your family. Dr. Flamer was a lifeline for me during a very tumultuous college career. I formally met him after the spring of my Sophomore year and he was a Godsend. Many times I would get myself in some stressful predicaments whether it were grades, financial aid or Lord knows what else and Doc would always be there but never without a few choice words. We talk about the nurturing and care we receive at black colleges and Dr. Flamer was a living testament of that. He was that visible nudge that we all needed when Mama and Daddy were hundreds of miles away. When I look back on my college years I thank God for Dr. Flamer and all the time and attention he gave to me and so many others. I hear my parents talk of college professors and advisors that helped shape them during their time in school and now I know that my children will always here tells of a great and caring man, Dr. Richard Flamer.
To the family my heartfelt sympathy and thanks for sharing such a wonderful spirit with so many young lives at a time when we needed it the most.
Rest In Peace Doc.

I remember the first time I meet Dr. Richard Flamer. It was in the Spring of 1988 at a SGA retreat in Ft. Walton Beach. I was a freshman. Doc was funny, he was alive, the life of the party. You just wanted to be around him. Mrs. Flamer just stood at his side and let him do his thang(thing). Doc was in his element with the student. I immediately knew I had a valued friend in Dr. Flamer.
Every time I created a problem for myself with my procrastination, Doc stepped in. When I walked all the way down to Foote-Hilyer and I would see that black mercedes, I knew it would be alright. I'd come to his office, kick up my feet, he'd roll his eyes, give me several chosen words, then proceed to fix the problem. This happened often. Sometimes I'd get in a jam just to hear what he would have to say. He was tough like dad, but a problem solver like big brother.
Of all the people I encountered at FAMU, some good and not so good, Dr. Flamer stands out the most. I can say without hesitation, he was excellence with caring. Dr. Richard Flamer made the FAMU experience an experience I will never forget. I will miss him.
Mrs. Flamer, you and your entire family have my family's heart felt sympathy. But we know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Thank you for allowing your husband and father to do a job he was born to do. I understand it was a sacrifice. Doc, thank you for the tough love and rest in peace.

Mrs. Flamer:
From our family to yours. Please accept our sympathy in your time of loss and sorrow.
We have just returned from Pennsylvania where we had laid to rest our last parent during the past weekend and learned to our sorrow that Dick had departed during our absence.
Richard (Dick) will be dearly missed in the mornings where we would meet at the end of my driveway to discuss the world and every other topic.

Dad Flamer, Thank you for making me part of your family. I take pride in being called your "adopted daughter". I will miss going to the house and hearing "Yoncee baby" called from across the room as you sat in your easy chair or in your den. I will never forget how funny it was that no matter where we went, someone always came up to you and said "Hey Doc". You are so loved by this community. Thank you for standing in the gap. You always look out for others.
Mom Flamer, Keith, Gail, and Chad, Thank you for sharing your father and your entire family with me. It is my honor to call you my friends. I thank you for your love through these years and I want you to know that no words can express the love I have for all of you. Mom, thank you for proving to me that true love lasts a lifetime.
Please know that I am praying for each of you during this time and always. Dad Flamer will be greatly missed. Luke 23:43 Jesus answered..."today you will be with me in paradise."

Dr. Flamer was so student-oriented and he always put our needs first. He talked tough when it was needed but we always knew he was a teddy bear underneath. He will be remembered as a part of the team of administrators that propelled FAMU forward to be the College of the Year and he embodied the motto "Excellence with Caring." I am so fortunate to have a picture of him which I will cherish. May God comfort the family and many friends of Dr. Flamer. A bright light flickers, but it will never go out!
