Words fail to capture the shock and dismay I felt on learning of Walt's death. A great spirit has left us. A clear thinker is gone. A good man will not be seen again in this life. My imagination is not able to grasp the depth of loss for his family. I am so sorry.

I did not have the privilege of serving along side Colonel Mitchell, but I now have the honor of working along side his son, Staff Sergeant (and Officer Candidate) Walter R. Mitchell, Jr. If SSG Mitchell is anything like his father, I am sure that Colonel Mitchell was a force to be reckoned with. Regrettably the Army has lost a tremendous asset. The thoughts and prayers of all the soldiers of Bravo Battery, 3-265th ADA, are with SSG Mitchell and his family.

Walt: I salute you my friend. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to know you, to benefit from your knowledge and skill, to have enjoyed easy conversation and a pleasant smile. While we are saddened because we will not soon see that smiling face again, I know that you have gone on to a much better place - I know the one who went before you, He promised that He would prepare a place for you! What a time we will have, when we all get together. Mrs Mitchell and family thanks for sharing Walt with those he worked with, we are all blessed by the experience. I know you grieve now, but also hold strong onto your faith. God Bless!

Jeanette - Be not dismayed what ever betide, God will take care of you. He knows what is best for us even though we don't understand his decisions for us sometime. I worked with Walt in Personnel from 1991-2001. He was a very special person. We will miss his caring and sunny personality. Continue to "Look to the Hills from whence come your help. Walt will be missed by those who knew him. He always had the right words to say and a solution to your problem. Walt was easy to talk to and his smile was warm. Walt was a gentle man that cared about people, no matter what color you were. I will truly miss him and my prayers are with his family. Thank you for allowing me to know such a man.

To Jeanette: Walt will be missed. Walt often told me about things he made for you, I like to sew also. He even brought a pantsuit he made to work one day to show us. He was a sweet person. I can truly say, I understand your pain. I lost my first husband to an accident, he was 35 when he got killed and I was 34 with 3 boys to raise (scary). God will ease your pain, but no lie memories of the time you heard he gone will never be forgotten. It's been 13 years and I can still remember that day in details; however, it don't hurt as much. Just remember the good times that you and Walt had and know that he loved you dearly. His destiny was chosen even before he chose you. God Bless you ... DOT Friends

Walter will be missed dearly. Though I didn't know him well personally, I felt as though we were friends in passing. While employed at DOT, I would pass Walter several times a day. He would always have a smile and a Hi for me. We never talked in length, but during my entire tenure there we remained just as the first day we saw one another. Walter was truly a special person.

Walt was a professional friend of mine in both the Army Reserve and at FDOT. In 1995, we started our friendship after I took over command of the Panama City Army Reserve Center from him. From that time on, we encouraged each other and talked frequently about how to achieve our goals in both the Army and at FDOT. Walt was promoted to Colonel recently and that is the pinacle of success as an Army officer. I will miss him greatly upon my return from overseas. I wanted to see that gentle smile on his face as I shared the things that happen here. To Jennette and the rest of his family, I can only offer my prayers and condolences to you all. Walt was a great man, who served his country and the State of Florida well. As one professional soldier to another, I salute him and his achievements in life.

To Walt's family - When a family member leaves us, the only comfort we have is in God. There will be times when you think you are all alone, but look to Him, and He will meet your needs. I have been down this road, and God along with family and friends, helped me to make it. I will be praying for you.
