Bethia CAFFERY Obituary

CAFFERY, Bethia Liddell 99, of St. Petersburg, died peacefully at home Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024. Born Jan. 16, 1925, in Macon, Ga., her heart always returned to the family home in St. Petersburg where she grew up and worked as a reporter and community columnist for the St. Petersburg Evening Independent for 20 years. Her strong support for Friends of the Library secured multitudes of donations. In 1975, she founded the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society, continuing today to connect and promote cultural diversity. A woman whose commitment, compassion, and grit spanned a century and defied norms, she inspired and was loved by countless good people. She is survived by all six of her children; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She lea-ves behind a legacy of commitment to community and political action, and a reminder to vote for Kamala Harris. Date of service and internment at St. Peter's Episcopal Church will be announced when available.

What a whimsical creative writer and inspiring mentor dear Bethia was as she catapulted my move from SPIFFS (Folk Fair) and the American Folks Arts Society events to newspaper reporting at the Evening Independent in the late 70s. I was proud to work alongside her & the other ferocious, yet at times tender, female reporters that commanded a winning and well-respected presence on the journalism scene here for decades. Bless you dear Bethia as you now sit among those heavenly stars that you often turned to for fanciful and wise guidance.

She was a distant cousin on my Caffery side. Sounds like she had some of the strong family traits of political conviction and gumption. Wish I’d known her!

I remember the first time I was at your house and Bethia brought me through every room and told me stories about her antiques. Bob especially loved her; so did I. I plan to keep in touch even if only through Facebook. You are a very special daughter of Bethia.

Thank you to the many people who have shared their memories of our mother with us, and their condolences. Her service and internment, however, is delayed due to Hurricane Milton. A new date will be announced when available.

I was one of the many strays that Bethia befriended and supported with her love, concern and unwavering devotion. We met in 1975 and have been close and demoted for all these years. We shared our dreams and commitment to causes, with a passion for making our communities a better place. We built memories together, first in St. Petersburg and on her many visits to Washington DC, New York City and the mountains of Western North Carolina. Her perspective on issues, big and small, where intelligent and often peppered with her great sense of humor.
She shared with me her friends and family that enriched my life beyond words. I shall miss our long talks and shared memories of a long passed St. Petersburg. Myk and I join so many others in our sorrow over the passing of an era.

My family lived across the alley from Bethia from 1941 until the early sixties. I have such fond memories of Bethia and all of the Cafferys. They were all colorful, vivacious, patriotic, learned and smart. I still remember Col. Caffery riding his horse down our back alley. What a wonderful family. This is the passing of the Old Guard. I treasure my friendship with Bethia.

Such a great loss to the family and the community. I met Bethia, through my mother Kay Lyons, in the 70´s. It was my first volunteer job and we worked on the Folk Fair together. Mom, my daughter Lynn and I were blessed to have had Bethia in our lives for many years. Our condolences and prayers go out to your family.
