Captain HAWKINS Obituary

HAWKINS, Captain Paul C. 72, passed away on August 9, 2022. Paul was born in St Petersburg, Florida April 5, 1950. He had been fishing the waters of Tampa Bay since he was a boy and became a sought-after professional fly-fishing guide in the Tampa Bay area and Florida Keys for more than forty years. He learned many of his angling skills from local icon Carl Hansen and legendary Florida sportsman Earl Gresh. He adopted their ethic of passing on his knowledge to others. He was happy to teach and gave clinics and seminars for the Florida League of Anglers. Paul was active in the Fishing Conservation Association and taught proper sportsmanship and respect for wildlife while on the water. Frank Sargeant, Outdoor Editor Emeritus, The Tampa Tribune wrote: "I was privileged to chase everything from tarpon and snook to mangrove snapper and seatrout with Captain Paul over the years on Tampa Bay, and he never failed to find the fish and instruct me on exactly how to catch them. He was a dedicated captain, an outstanding angler and a great friend." Paul is survived by his wife, Mary Profetta Hawkins; their son Paul Jr., both of St Petersburg, Florida. Also surviving are younger brothers, Peter Hawkins of Marietta, Georgia and Tim Hawkins of Madeira Beach, Florida. A celebration of life gathering with friends and family will be announced at a later date.

I worked with Paul at a printing company)Eva-Tone) as a young man.
His goal was to give up his job and start his own business as a fishing guide. It was his passion and his desire to make this his goal.
He would call me on weekends to get the boat on the water and use me as a makeshift fair, as a way to hone his path to being a guide. He earned his captain license and soon after bid me and the daily grind behind.
This was in the early 90,s and I in my 20´s with a new family soon lost contact.
Recently I was speaking to a coworker about him and decided to google Paul. To my surprise and saddened I learned of his passing.

The stone in my heart about this news is quickly replaced by simply remembering our time together and what I learned from him about the sport we both shared.

In later years, I shared some of what Paul passed along to me, to my son, who grew to appreciate our great times on the water.

Thank you Captain Hawkins.

Remembering you Paul.
A kinder gentler person no one will never know.. a credit to all that knew him. He was always ready to coach anyone that asked it. Did many clinics for me with the FLA.. and never said no.
It was my honor and privilege to have known you for all these years, Paul.
And some of us know you didn't always use a fly.. - Paul could bend a grouper rod with the best of them, thanks for being my guest...

Rest in Peace, Paul.. my dear old friend.

Respectfully, Capt Larry Blue

My sincere condolences to the Hawkin's family. Paul was a good guy, a great angler, guide, and my friend. I'm sad that we lost contact over the years. He will be missed. God grant I may live to fish until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray, when in the Lord's landing net, and peacefully asleep that in his mercy I be judged big enough to keep. Fisherman's Prayer. Fish on, my friend.

I spent many hours swaping stories with Capt. Paul at O'Neil's Marina. I also enjoyed fishing with him in his genuine Willy Roberts skiff. We will miss him on the waterfront.

So sorry to hear the news, he will be missed and our fishy world is a much duller spot without him. RIP Paul, may your winds be light and your seas calm now.
