I was very saddened to read of Don's passing in the Bradenton paper yesterday. Don and I were classmates at Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary. The last time I saw him was in 1987 in St. Petersburg, when he was an assistant to the bishop. I will always remember him as a careing and friendly human being, who, like me, was born in 1930 and became a pastor in the Lutheran Church......

Dear Sue and family.
We are so saddened to lose Don. He was a great friend for many years and kept the Bellevue class of 1948 together thru the BellHop. We will miss his humor, thoughtfulness and compassion. We are so happy that we got to visit with you and Don in Florida. May God keep you and your family well. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Himmelman Family,
Very sad to hear that Pastor Himmelman is no longer with us, you are all in my prayers. It has been a very long time, but my Grandmother and I used to attend services at St. Matthias when I was a young girl and I used to spend time with Karen when I was in middle school / high school and always remember having great fun at your house in Safety Harbor. My grandmother was Linnea Benson (Dunedin) and my maiden name was Dupuy (Clearwater). My very best to all of you!

I think of the time I shared with the "Preach" in the woods and know I will miss him telling me that Theil beat Bethany in football and that I was welcome at the poker table to contribute to the fund. He is a warm and wonderful giving man who made this earth a better place.

Dear Sue and all Don's family and friends,

As we celebrate this man's beautiful life and rejoice in his victory over death, each of us has a story or twelve to tell of how we have been touched and enriched by his presence. As for me, I shared with "Preach" several years ago that I had been asked to consider becoming a layspeaker in my little church. After a brief conversation and a couple of very supportive emails from him, I agreed and have found my new role to be quite fulfilling. Because he encouraged me, I now have the opportunity to encourage others. In fact, I believe he is smiling at the irony as I write to tell you, Sue, that I will actually be teaching Basic Layspeaking for the UMC East Central District the weekend of Don's celebration. You can be assured there will be an entire class thanking God for the power and influence of the life of Don Himmelman that day. Thank you so much for sharing him with the rest of us!

I guess all we can hope for in this world is to do the next right thing, be of service to others and to love as we hoped to be loved. Our Preacher was a Master of this "code" and a great example for all who were around him. We will continue to be inspired to do "right" simply because he walked in our path. Blessings to you Sue and all the family.

A man for all seasons. Don was an inspiration to us all, and loved by all. He showed us how to love and live as a man, as a spiritual leader, as a brother, and as a friend. He is sorely missed. God and His angels are much richer with Don at their sides.

If there is anyone in this world that did not love Don - I would be amazed. A truly loving human being. He was such a joy to be around. Even in pain he always could make anyone feel good with his smile. I feel blessed to have known him and to have given and received hugs from him. May the good lord be waiting with open arms.

Sue and family. Don and I were in the same class many years ago. The fact that a Preacher and a Judge were in the group had Rusty shaking his head in wonder. Only God knew what a great contribution you would make in serving and sharing with all of this strange family. There are not enough words to express how close he was to so many people. He will be greatly missed. Bill and Lois Ward

Don has left a vacant spot in my heart. He gathered me into his life in the woods first as roommates in his motor home and then at the motel. I treasure the discussions of the life around us and the previews of his sunday services. He had a destinct way of balancing his spiritual side with the raucous atmosphere of "the woods". I will miss him greatly.

Dear Sue and the Himmelman family.. I will never forget the first time I met your Don.. it was in Salt Lake City at the 1980 barbershop convention. He was the MC at one of the contest sessions and told the "Not even God can hit a one iron" story. He had me and the audience rolling in the aisles. He can now verify this... first hand. Over the years we became very close and I shall cherish the times Hollie and I spent with you and Don. I will miss him a lot. Love and prayers.

It's amazing that some people can make others feel as though their individual relationship is unique and special. Don was such a man as described by me and many friends who have related the way they interacted with Don. Labels melted away and meaningful dialog was possible in a warm and amiable interaction. I already miss his easy manner and warm personality.

Dear Sue,
And now we have the wonderful memories of life with Don to hang onto. May you know God's presence and blessings as you move on. I count Don as one of my good friends and our times when you and Don and Doris and I shared good times and good meals together. Know that we'll always be here for you, if seperated now by many miles.

Don was one of an upstanding Christian family in our home town and lived his life based on their values and morals. He shared them with countless people through his long ministry. Dear Sue: Pat and I are so VERY grateful for the opportunity to visit with you and Don when we were last in Dunedin! We are utterly dismayed that we will not be able to participate in the Memorial Service on September 20; we will be in Paris for Audra's wedding on that very date. I will ALWAYS be more grateful than words can convey that Don was MY pastor in the years when we served together in the Clearwater area! Don was, truly, a Pastor's Pastor and the most faithful of servants. We pray for God's richest blessings and Presence for you in these days and weeks.
