McLEOD, Elizabeth Joan

"Betty" 83, of Saint Petersburg, FL, passed away in her sleep Friday, June 23, 2017, at Westminster Suncoast. Her partner, Jane, and many friends were close at hand. Proud Vermonter and veteran, Betty was born in Barre, VT, graduated from Boston University, and served in the U.S. Navy as Ensign and Lieutenant. Thereafter in the U.S. Naval Reserves, she worked in Boston as a marketing director and technical writer, then returned to Vermont and worked until retirement in 1997. As a member of RVing Women (RVW), Betty met Jane States Kelly. Betty and Jane joined their lives June 22, 1997. When same-sex relationships were recognized by the State of Vermont, they celebrated their civil union September 8, 2001, in Waterbury, VT. They were married in Florida April 11, 2015, at the United Church of Christ at The Villages. During their RV travels to 48 states, Canada and Mexico, Betty and Jane became frequent National Wildlife Refuge volunteers. In 2005, they moved to The Villages in Florida, enjoying golf and making many new friends. In 2014, they moved to Westminster Suncoast in St. Petersburg. Betty is survived by her partner of 20 years, Jane Kelly; her brother, Robert McLeod; niece, Julia Garufi; nephew, Stephen McLeod; three stepsons, William, John, and Patrick Kelly, and their families.
