Anne Hallett Obituary

Anne Marshall Hallett, 85, quietly breathed her last breath with her husband at her side on November 20, 2018, after a short battle with cancer. She had chosen to spend her last weeks at home seeing family and friends who came from as far as Australia to say farewell. Born in Waterville, Maine, on August 23, 1933 to Asa and Ruth Marshall, she is survived by her brothers William, Thomas and Peter, and her sister Pamela who live in Canada, Kentucky, Indiana and Florida; all of whom will greatly miss their sister. She was predeceased by her youngest brother Alan. In 1955, she graduated from Indiana University with a degree in journalism and immediately went to work for NBC/TV in Chicago. She then became a sailing reporter for the New London Day in Connecticut, and later a freelance writer for sailing magazines, including Yachting and Soundings. Anne started sailing with her grandfather at age 5, graduating to 18' knockabouts on Cape Cod and later sailing Off Soundings races, the Newport-Bermuda Race, cruising in the Baltic and the Caribbean, and a trip from Madeira to the Canary Islands. She was particularly proud of the 1300-mile voyage from Beaufort NC to Tortola which earned her membership in the Ocean Cruising Club. In addition to sailing, Anne was passionate about music (she played classical piano), theater, skiing, travel and all things festive, never missing an opportunity to visit friends and meet new people. She enjoyed the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, the Annapolis Maritime Museum and volunteering at Colonial Players. Anne had three children from her first marriage to Allen N. Anderson, of Mystic CT; Mark Anderson and wife Laura of Baltimore; LCDR Scott Anderson, USNR (ret.) and wife Jennifer of Louisville, Kentucky; and her daughter Amy Ledoux and husband Chris of Annapolis. Anne was married for 47 wonderful years to Frederick H. Hallett. Together they have a son, LtCol Joshua Hallett, USMC (ret.) married to Wendy both of Dusseldorf, Germany, with grandsons Connor (USNA class of 2022) and Hayden. Anne is also survived by grandchildren Katie and William of Kentucky and Kelly of Baltimore, as well as three great-grandchildren. Fred's four children from his previous marriage, Ann Velden of Madison WI, Peter Hallett of Bellingham WA, Dr. Mark Hallett of Camas WA and Andrew Hallett of Sister Bay WI, also shared her love and concern. Everyone who knew her remembers her ready smile, quirky sense of humor, warm hospitality, seemingly endless energy and vivacious personality. She will be sorely missed as a Mom, wife, grandmother, and friend of so many. There will be a private burial at the Marshall family plot in Ithaca, N.Y., and an Annapolis celebration of her life in early January. Those close to her extend their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers of Hospice of the Chesapeake and Regent Healthcare who gently eased her through the last weeks of her life. For those who wish to honor her memory, the family suggests a contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis TN 38101-9929.
