Harlan Cleveland Obituary

CLEVELAND, Harlan M. 93, of St. Petersburg, was promoted to glory May 18. Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, Harlan graduated from, Ensley High School-Ensley, AL. Foreshadowing his career in Salvation Army ministry, as a teen Harlan was a Life-Saving Scout and awarded for deeds of bravery and saving lives. He attended Bob Jones College and graduated from The Salvation Army College for Officers in Atlanta, GA. A Lt. Colonel, serving 45 years, he commanded the states of Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, the country of Mexico and lastly was responsible for Salvation Army personnel in the 13 southern states. He was a ham radio operator, pilot and Rotarian. In active Salvation Army retirement, he logged over 5,000 hours volunteering at Bay Pines VA and Egret Cove. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, and is survived by his children, Major Georgia Cleveland Henderson of Pinellas Park, Harlan Paul Cleveland of Garland, TX, Dorothy Ethel Cleveland-Pointer of Upper Marlboro, MD; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at R. Lee Williams Funeral Home on Monday, May 23, from 5-7. The funeral will be held at The Salvation Army, 3800 9th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, Tuesday, May 24, at 2 pm, preceded by visitation from 1-2 pm.
