MACFARLANE, Hugh Campbell, 91, the son of Howard P. Macfarlane and Carolyn K. Macfarlane, and a lifelong resident of Tampa, died February 21, 2009. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sarah Leffen Macfarlane, in 1993. He is survived by his sister, Anne M. Clark of Tampa; and his brother-in-law, William F. Leffen (Virginia) of Joplin, Mo.; four children, a daughter, Sarah M. Wiley (Hal); three sons, Howard P. Macfarlane, II (Cathy), Hugh C. Macfarlane Jr. (Lynn), and Andrew K. Macfarlane (Ellen), all of Tampa. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Henry E. Wiley IV (Lindsay), Caroline W. LaRosa (Justin), Emily H. Macfarlane, Hugh C. Macfarlane III, Andrew J. Macfarlane, W. M. Macfarlane, and Bonnie C. Macfarlane; and four great- grandchildren, Grady and Gwendolyn Wiley, Isabella and Russell LaRosa. Mr. Macfarlane was the grandson and namesake of Col. Hugh C. Macfarlane, one of this city' s early and best known attorneys and the founder and developer of West Tampa. His father, Howard P. Macfarlane, was recognized for many years as an outstanding member of this city' s Bar. Both of these ancestors were founding members of the law firm now known as Macfarlane, Ferguson & McMullen. He became a member of the Florida Bar in 1941, and following his graduation from Washington & Lee University Law School, in 1946, he joined the law firm bearing his family name and practiced with the partnership for forty years, first as an associate, then as a partner and ultimately as a managing partner. In 1942, Mr. Macfarlane graduated from Midshipman' s School as an Ensign and served in the U.S. Navy on four ships during the next several years, commanding two of these vessels. He participated in the initial wave of the Okinawa invasion and was discharged in 1945 as a lieutenant Sr. Grade. He had two primary business affiliations during his life, he was elected a director of General Telephone Company of Florida in 1961 and held this position for twenty-five years. In 1963, he became a director of First Florida Bank and served for more than 25 years in this capacity. Two of his major clients were General Telephone Company of Florida and Peoples Gas System. In the field of community affairs, Mr. Macfarlane was the Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board from 1961-1968 and while so serving led a capital campaign which resulted in the construction of its Citadel and Red Shield Lodge. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the University of Tampa and to the Board of Directors of the Florida State Fair and Gasparilla Association and served for a number of years on each Board. Mr. Macfarlane held membership in Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club, the Tampa Yacht and Country Club, the University Club of Tampa, and the Merrymakers Club. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2009, at St. Andrew' s Episcopal Church, Marion and Madison Streets. Interment at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Macfarlane may be made to the Children' s Home of Tampa, P.O. Box 262229, Tampa, FL 33685 or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2839, Tampa, 33601. Mr. Macfarlane' s family would like to thank the staff of Canterbury Tower, particularly those who work in the Health Center, for their compassion and professionalism in caring for him at the end of his life.
