I feel blessed for having been given the opportunity to get to meet and know Joan over the past 4 years. We met in church and as time passed I knew our friendship was more than a coincidence. Her bubbly and fun personality was a joy to be around. Her courage and strength were an inspiration to all of us who have experienced bumps on our journey of life. Joan, Harry Bob and I had many good laughs over the years whether it was while we were out for dinner or just sitting over coffee in our kitchen. We will miss her radiant smile and fun filled laugh. carmen and bob thorpe

I wanted to share a fond memory of how Aunt Joan and the Nielsens warmly and graciously hosted our family when we unexpectedly had to extend our stay in Howell, NJ in 1987. My father (her brother) Ed was hospitalized for an emergency appendectomy the day we were slated to return to the midwest.
My thoughts go out to your family, wishing you all peace, love and comfort.

To know her was to love her, whether you were having spaghetti and meatballs at her house, sitting by the fire that Harry always made or just listening to her 50's music on the deck they were just the best of times and I am so glad to have been a part of them. I will cherish my memories of Joan for the remainder of my life. She was just the best and she will be missed by so many. God Bless her family always. Barbara Fluhr, Howell, NJ

my thoughts,(many good ones),and prayers go out to the Nielsen family.Joan and harry played a very important part of my growing up years. I loved to make her laugh,it made me laugh. the water fights we had, and the dandalion wine were 2 of many good memories. I could always go next door,no matter what time it was, and believe me, sometimes it was late, and talk w/her and harry. They were the cool couple to have next door. Rest In Peace Joan.

MOM,
Growing up you inspired me to be strong and never give up.
In the last 30 months you showed me how it's done.
I will carry and feed off that for the rest of my days.
Please know that watching you fight like you did, will enable me to do the same.
Until we meet again, I LOVE YOU, Jay

One of my fondest memories as a teenager is shooting fireworks at the Nielsens. Joan calmly saying, "I smell something burning" as the trees in the yard were burning. She wanted to kill us, but couldn"t stop laughing at us trying to put out the fire. She was a wonderful person, she will be part of my life forever.

Joannie was my friend. I missed her when she moved to Florida, I will miss her forever now. It was always my plan to visit her in her new home, now I will have to wait to see her on the other side. She was all that her obituary said and more. She was loyal, a good friend and she could be funny. We formed a group, Joannie, me and Marge Wands, the older ladies from Grand Union. We stuck together, we laughed together, we complained together. She was a good friend. Something rare and something wonderful. My heart goes out to her family, whom she loved with every fiber of her being. They were always first with her, taking care of them was her priority.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your wife, mother and friend. Joan was my mother's good friend and whenever she came over, we always had a good laugh. she was always in a good mood whenever I saw her. I'm very sad that I did not get to see her when she came up to NJ recently .. I wasn't feeling well and I regret that...you just never know when it is someone's last day on earth.
My condolences,
