Joel PRAWER Obituary

PRAWER MD, Joel S.

66, passed away peacefully at home in the loving care of his wife, Cathy, on October 11, 2017. Joel was born in St. Paul, MN, to Herman and Ethel Prawer. He was a family physician at Point Brittany Medical Center for 35 years. Joel earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota. He completed a three year Family Practice residency at Bayfront Medical Center, where he continued to teach since his graduation. In June 2017, Joel was awarded the outstanding preceptor award. His son, Adam, joined him in practice in 2012. Joel's love of family was always his first priority. He also loved medicine and teaching the next generation of doctors. He was a lifelong learner. Joel was passionate about sports and an avid Rays and Gator fan. He enjoyed his own sports, walking the beach, working out, and traveling. Joel so enjoyed caring for his patients. In his free time, he enjoyed reading, spending family time on Ft. Myers Beach, and devouring his wife and daughter's cooking and baking. Joel truly enjoyed life every day and always saw the bright side of things. He was a magnificent problem solver and thinking out of the box was one of his many strengths. Joel is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Cathy; son, Adam (Catie) Prawer MD; daughter, Sarah (Ryan) Lipton; grandchildren, Emma Grace and David; brother, Kenneth (Bonnie); mother-in-law, Marie Herman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Brenda and Gerry Krug; and several adoring nieces and nephews. Joel was predeceased by his brothers, William and Donald. Services will be held at 1:30 pm, Sunday, October 15, at Temple Beth-El, 400 Pasadena Ave. S., St. Petersburg. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Park in Largo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Joel's memory to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760. I often think of Dr. Joel Prawer and the wonderful physician and teacher he was. His kindness and intelligence made him such a unique physician and I was proud to work with him. His son is indeed a wonderful physician, who has and that blend of caring and kindness only matched by his medical knowledge. Joel Prawer helped many patients to live a better life and allowed them to have a say in their quality of life long before patient-centered outcomes was a concern of most healthcare providers. He was a physician ahead of his time and I´m proud to have worked beside him.

I continue to miss my great, skillful wise and caring Dr. Joel PRAWER. His memory is so strong in my heart and the heart of many others. I am so grateful that he instilled his personal wisdom and skill of providing the care all the patients need in his wife Cathy, his son Adam, and the many he taught in his precious lifetime. I feel Dr. Joel´s presence every time I go to my appointments with Adam. I love Adam and his similar but individual style of caring for me and others. He allows me to treat him as one of my own family and is gently but sternly able to remind me to "follow Dr.´s orders" ! Always in my heart.

I really miss my Dr. Joel. Our birthdays were just days apart, same month. He checked on me every time I was in the office. He would say," you're not on my schedule but I am still checking on you.". He treated me very special and that's a quality you are not always able to have in a Dr. He was humorous and caring simultaneously. I miss him,He is forever in my heart. ♥♥♥

This past Saturday, the St. Paul Central Class of 1969 gathered together at a small park to celebrate and reminisce.
My only opportunity to see Joel, since our high school graduation, was at these events, and each time, we would share a warm hug and several laughs while remembering our days at Ramsey Jr. High, and St. Paul Central.
When you see someone so infrequently, there can be a bit of an awkward feeling, but this never existed with Joel. He remained the same warm, friendly, good natured person I met all those years ago.
As so often happens at these reunions, there is a plaque, naming those classmates who have moved on. It was while viewing this that my heart sank, seeing Joel's name. It was such a shock, as I'd heard nothing about his passing and had thought that I might see him and share stories of our families and assorted sport teams.
I will miss my easy going, way too smart friend. His humor and friendship will remain in my heart, always.

To Cathy, Adam, and the extended Prawer family: true heartfelt condolences and sorrow for your loss of a great man.
After being out of town nearly three weeks, today I was stunned to hear of Dr. Prawer's obituary. Joel was a gentleman, and a true role model for a family physician - he was empathetic, he was state-of-the-art, he was caring, and he listened! His early departure represents a huge loss for the entire community, because his life was the type that touched so many people - his kind, gentle impact created a ripple effect that will continue to roll on for years and years.
May he rest in peace.

To Cathy and Adam
I just returned from a trip to a "Homegoing" for my great great niece, only to be heartbroken by one of your former employees. I asked if she had spoken with anyone from the Point Brittany group and she informed me of the passing of my beloved Dr. Joel! Before I met you two my wonderful former providers, I had the best Doctor in the world. Dr. Joel took care of me many many years. He saved my life more than once with the help of GOD. I am devastated and have thought of how you all may be feeling. I pray you are comforted in your season of sorrow. I loved Dr. Prayer as you know I inquired of him constantly. I love you both and pray your days get easier to bear as time moves forward. I look forward to seeing you all again one day. Thank you for the skillful and wonderful care you invested your time in my health and well being. My sincere condolences to you all always, Sandra Harris

Dr. Prawer was a kind soul and a generous friend. He gave of his time and himself. I clearly remember Joe helping me study in school. His friendship was unconditional. I know his family's heart is breaking but Joe is such a part of you, his spirit will live on. Remember the good times and pray through the bad. May he finally be at peace.

My deepest sympathy to Cathy and family. I met Dr. Joel Prawer in the early 80's and he treated me like we grew up together. He was one of my favorite Doctors at Bayfront, then I worked part time at Edward White and I met Cathy and her attitude was the same. God put two wonderful people together. God bless you. I'm praying for your strength.

Joel and I go all the way back to college and medical school. We spent hours and hours studying and many an all nighter cramming together. We were best medical school buddies for sure and kept in touch. I, like all that knew him, have been devastated by the rapidly progressive events of the last few months. Joel was an extremely smart and talented student and physician. He loved sports and the occasional wager and was an accomplished baseball/softball player. He was the best pool player I ever played or saw for that matter. No one was even close. I saw him run 50 straight balls in a game of 14-1. He once was called up from the audience to play an exhibition with Willie Mosconi, that's like doing a guitar riff with Jimi Hendrix or pepper with Babe Ruth! I was not there but I suspect Willie at one point was asking himself, "Who is this kid?"
A fond memory I have of Joel is from our 2nd year of med school. Joel was representing the university in the Big Ten pool tournament, having easily won the university qualifier. Typically, he had made several sizeable side bets on himself. He was doing very well when his girlfriend and his ex girlfriend both showed up to root him on. The problem was it was not clear to anyone, including Joel, who was who in that arrangement. This of course led to a heated debate, the intensity of which proved too distracting for Joel and in spite of having the best game he did not prevail. He quickly shrugged it off and in his words , "was on to the next thing." All of this amidst the consuming demands of med school. To be sure, when he met Cathy he was totally smitten and never looked back. I know he loved her dearly. I know he was very proud of and loved his children as well.
Joel was my good friend. I was fortunate to have shared some formative years and beyond with him. I will miss him.
