Wish there were more like him. A character, an animal lover, a spark in peoples lives. We patronized the bar through the 90's. Were from Canada.

John was and is an outsized figure in my life. We, my brother and mother and I, moved to the beach a couple of blocks south of Mahuffers the summer before 6th grade and lived there 8 years. This would have been around 1978.He was the go to man for all things fishing and as we got older, advice. My mother purchased my 1st "shark" rod and reel from him when I made my first ever straight A's on my report card in the 8th grade. He spooled it up and told me how to take care of it. Through the years he repaired that reel several times for me. He taught me a lot and I should have listened better. My family had good times and bad times living there but I will always remember him. I remember the 1st time he decided to have a big and I mean big party with food and drink (this was before it became a PUB) he paid my brother and I to help prep and clean. Started early and stayed late. I remember thinking that day would never end. Once he paid me to go up in the attic and place some insulation. I have never forgotten how much that insulation caused me to itch! Its now 2020 and I just found out he passed away but through the years I thought of him many times every year. I wish I knew how wise he was then, as I do now. I think I will plan a little getaway for my wife and I to come to Mahuffers. I hope I don't cry. Let me finish by saying: John, I remember. I remember a lot. I have told a lot of stories about you and your place to a lot of people over the years. I did not know it then but I loved you. Rest in peace. Hope to see you again sometime. Loren

OUR FAMILY PLANNED A MINI GET AWAY FOR A FEW DAYS TO ST. PETE BEACH AREA. A TRIP WAS PLANNED TO VISIT MAHUFFER'S, AS USUAL WHEN MY WIFE AND I WERE IN THE AREA. THIS TIME, WED. JULY 16TH IT WAS TO TAKE OUR 21 AND 22 YEAR OLD'S TO SHOW OUR KIDS WHERE WE HAD A LOT OF FUN. WE WERE SHOCKED TO FIND OUT JOHN HAD PASSED AWAY. IT WAS A BIT OF A BUMMER, BUT WE STILL ENJOYED OURSELVES LIKE HE WAS STILL THERE. HE IS A LEGEND IN HIS OWN RIGHT. HE STOOD FOR WHAT HE BELIEVED IN AND DIDN'T BACK DOWN. RIP

Unk,
You were my last relative from your generation. Time moves on, Now Lynn and I are officially the old ones.
All our many conservations we never talk about what will happen to us when we leave this world.
Where are you now Uncle John,
Where have you gone.
Did someone meet you, take you by the hand and say come along now John. But were in no hurry now, we have all the time in the world.
Wouldn`t that be great.
Are you where their is so much light, so much happiness and everyone lives in harmony.
Wouldn`t that be great.
Are there no more borders, no more armies, no more wars,
Wouldn`t that be great.
Are you where there is no more anger, nor more grief, no more pain.
Wouldn`t that be great.
Goodbye Unk from all my family,
Al Grimm

Hey Bucko,
I'm glad I got to chat with you one last time on my trip to Indian Shores back in November. After the Big Bamboo closed in Kissimmee, Mahauffer's became my 2nd home. They don't make 'em quite like you anymore and the world isn't quite the same without you in it. The angels do know what they're in for. Sail on, Sailor.

To The Susor Family; I decided to buy my home on Indian Shores after my 1st visit to "Mahufers". I went on a "lost week-end" w/John to Key West in 1999.... He's the only man who punched me that I didn't hit back. I loved him. God Speed, "Bucko" R.I.P. -SKD-

When i first visited this area, my friends took me to Mahuffer's (Sloppy John's) I thought it was the "best" ! Also pet friendly !!
I now live in the area and always take my out of town friends for a visit. I remember watching TV and it was listed as one of the most extreme homes on HGTV. Will always remember the music and great times.
You will be missed but not forgotten

the bar when you weren't looking. We'll miss you. Pete & Jane / Broken Arrow, OK

We would like to express our condolences to John's family. We grew up in that neighborhood and lived behind John for 15 years. When I was a little girl back in the late 70's early 80's I use to ride my bike up just about everyday and I would ring the door bell he had by the bait shop. Mahuffer "John" would give me a soda, shrimp and a bag of chips no charge. He was friends with our mother Pat Wiltberger. John was always really good to my mother and us kids. We will miss him!
God Bless

It's hard to believe that I sat next to him and chatted 15 days ago while back home for Christmas. The beach was already changing too fast for my tastes and now John's gone. His spirit will be missed. He sure lived a fascinating life.

My wife and I lived om Madeira Beach from 1977 Through 1986 and then moved just 10 minutes away. We always remember John driving around in his car with no doors and the umbrella sticking out of the middle. We also would go to his bar once in a while for a couple of drinks and look at all the odd and different things hanging around. Never knew him personally but he sure was a character to never forget.

Oh my, a legend has passed. My condolences to John's family. I got to visit Mahuffers many times durng my visits to my friends Gloria and Lee in Seminole and trust me, it was an experience I'll never forget. I have many great pictures taken from those visits with John and many other people who frequented the establishment. John was a "character" to say the least and the heavens will be enlightened with his coming home. It just won't be the same, Rest in Peace John.

John, Once you threw me out of the bar, literally by my ear! I was so shocked, yet wasn't sure whethr to laugh or get mad! Even though nothing like that had ever happened before and isn't likely to ever happen again, it was still one of the bright spots of my times at your place. Keep everyone straight up there in heaven and try to stay out of trouble up there. You'll be missed down here.. SMC
