John UZZELL

UZZELL, John Douglas Beloved husband and father John Douglas Uzzell, 84, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at his home in Portland, Oregon. Doug grew up in Houston, Texas, and was an alum of Reagan High School. After serving in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, Doug took two degrees in English at the University of Houston and started a family. Doug served in Vietnam and then earned his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. His research took him to Peru, Mexico, and communities in Texas. Doug was active in the civil rights movement in Houston and Austin. He taught at Rice University, Southern Methodist University, and the University of South Florida, and made important contributions to the field of urban anthropology. Doug was a friend of Bill W. since 1985. He earned credentials as a psychotherapist with expertise in addiction counseling, devoting three decades to helping countless families and individuals in Tampa, Florida. Doug was a writer of poetry, a novel, and short stories. He was a raconteur known for his wit and warmth. He was a sailor at heart, a tinkerer, an innovator, and a deep thinker. Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara "Bobby" Frazier Collier Uzzell; his father, Douglas Drew Uzzell; and his little brother "Jeep" Uzzell. Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Whiteford, of Portland, Oregon; and their daughter, Caitlin (Colin) McWilliams of Helena, Montana; his former spouse, Melanie Uzzell; and their daughters, Shawn (David) Gray and Gwen (Jim) Pauloski, of Houston; his brother, Richard Uzzell, of Houston; his grandchildren, Montana, Matthew, Sage, Colter, and Bodhi; as well as cherished brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the ACLU of Florida or Texas.
