Philip Quinn Obituary
QUINN, Dr. Philip Francis 78, entered eternal rest on Jan. 1, 2011. He is preceded in death by his parents William and Helen Quinn. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Jo Ann; his three devoted daughters, Lainie Thompson (James), Megan Bennett (Bobby), and Colleen Swenson (Tye); his seven wonderful grandchildren Michaela, Abbey, Emily, Thayne, Annabelle, Bridget, and Robert; brothers, William of Wisconsin Rapids and James (Maureen) of Wilmette, IL; and many nieces and nephews. Phil was born in Chicago and attended Loyola Academy. At 19, he entered the Jesuit order and ministered as a Catholic priest for 22 years. He taught high school, and served as athletic director at Xavier High School in Cincinnati. Phil was a college counselor at Mundelein of Chicago and campus chaplain at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Loyola University of Chicago. When he moved to Tampa in 1971, he was the director of the Pastoral Counseling Center at St. Joseph's Hospital. There he trained priests in the Diocese of St. Petersburg in pastoral counseling. In 1974, he married the love of his life, Jo Ann Farina, and they raised 3 outstanding daughters. During Phil's lifetime he served in numerous capacities. As a professor at the University of Tampa for 32 years he always placed his students first, giving them the opportunity to receive first hand knowledge of the criminal justice system. He established an endowed scholarship for students to travel abroad to study the criminal justice system in other countries. He was listed in Town & Country magazine as one of the best psychotherapists in the nation in 1988. He volunteered his services as a psychologist to Tampa Police Department, served on the board of DUI for 30 years, board member of Tampa Crossroads, and various other boards. Phil had a passion for raising roses and spent hours in his yard turning it into a park-like refuge. Pallbearers are James Thompson, Bobby Bennett, Tye Swenson, Fred Castellano, Tom Farina, and Paul Malek. Honorary pallbearers are Carey Bolster, James Coward, Steve Dachs, Jim Farina, Joe Farina, Bill Gietzen, Dr. Ellis Gesten, Dr. Tom Johnson, Dr. David Mullen, Joe Navarro, Dr. Patrick O'Halloran, Dr. Anthony Pidala, Dr. Frank Pidala, James Quinn, William Quinn, Don Tucker, and Chris Yarnold. Visitation is at Blount and Curry, Terrace Oaks Chapel on Friday, Jan. 7, from 5-9. A celebration of Phil's life is at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, January 8, at 10:00 am. Reception to follow. Celebrants are Fr. Andrew Reitz, Fr. Robert Morris, Msgr. Frank Mouch, Fr. John Lipscomb and Fr. John Aurilia . Flowers are appreciated as are donations to the Philip F.
