Raymond SMITH Obituary

SMITH, Raymond Paul III "Ray" of Treasure Island, died doing what he loved in Key West, FL August 8, 2019 at the age of 67. He is survived by his beautiful bride of 34 years, Jeri and their four children, Gage, Nicholas, Melissa, and Molly Smith; brother, Tommy (Tiffany); and sisters, Peggy, Janie (Steve), Debbie (Van), Nancy (Bobby), and Melissa (Paul). Ray was born April 17, 1952 in Baltimore, MD. The family moved to the great state of Texas where he spent the majority of his youth. His senior year of high school, the Smiths moved to Harrison, Arkansas where Ray graduated high school (being crowned Mr. Harrison High). He then moved to Mobile, Alabama where he attended Spring Hill College. After graduating college with a B.S. in Commerce, he took various sales jobs throughout the Southeast US before moving to Tampa, FL to be closer to the family, and to work with his father. Raymond Smith Jr. was VP of Southeastern Wire and Ray started at the bottom loading trucks and cutting pipe, but eventually was promoted into a sales position. He was soon laid off for reasons in which Raymond Jr. greatly disagreed with, so they both immediately left the business. Six months later, they started Smith Fence Company in a small warehouse in Clearwater, FL which has grown to employ and change the lives of over 150 families. The company will continue to thrive under the guidance of his brother and the Smith family. Among other accomplishments and activities, Ray was the President of the Bolesta Center for Listening & Spoken Language. He was also involved with University of South Florida Iron Bulls and was the Chairman of Sabal Trust. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, Cornerstone Bank, and Tampa Bay Watch. In addition, he was a member at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Porsche Drivers Club, St. Petersburg Wing Shooters Club, St. Petersburg Underwater Dive Club, and the Squire's. Ray was an avid patriot, pilot, sport fisherman, huntsmen (2005 Canadian coyote shootout champion), diver, WWII history buff, traveler, adventure seeker, racing safety ambassador, and Blanton's collector. He lived a truly enviable life. Ray worked harder than anyone we knew, while keeping his family the top priority, and always found a way to live an adventurous lifestyle. He will be missed by all but as they say, "Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die." There will be a celebration of his life at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club from 4-7 pm, Friday, August 16, 2019. Please join us to celebrate his epic, full throttled, and truly enviable life. All are welcome who want to attend. We ask if everyone could please bring their favorite picture of Ray. Dress code is Key West Casual. In lieu of gifts, the family ask that donations are made to Bolesta Center, Inc. at USF for hearing impaired children www.usf.edu/cbcs/csd/bolesta/ Guestbook is at: www.brettfuneralhome.net

The recent Spring Hill College newsletter mentioned Ray's passing. We were his classmates at Spring Hill in the business school. We send our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. He was a special guy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ray a couple of years ago at a fencing function in Florida. I had heard great things about Ray Smith and Smith Fence Company for many years from other long time industry folks. During that short period over the weekend in Florida, my wife Sandra and I were able to spend some time with Ray and Jeri and I was able to get to know the man just a bit. After that short time I totally understood why he was so respected in our industry and loved by many. My heart pained when I found out about his passing. Our industry has lost a truly great man and an authentic leader of men. We are praying now and will continue to pray for Jeri, the Smith family and Smith Fence Company that you find peace and comfort from God moving forward in this new season in your lives. I am confident that the memories of Ray Smith will go on forever by many, and will always bring a smile to anyone who knew him. God Bless the Smith Family.

Dear Gage, Nick and family,

I met your Dad last summer at VIP Mexican when he was there with your family and I was with some of mine. I remember thinking after meeting him and chatting with you guys, along with my daughter Lily and her hubby Chris, that there's a guy who's living life and loving his family and enjoying all the best things life has to offer. My heart aches and breaks for all of you after your unfathomable loss. May all your wonderful memories live on with him in your hearts forever.

Love and hugs,

I had the pleasure of knowing Ray for many years after he moved to the Bay Area, and was introduced by our mutual friend Jesse, who had attended Spring Hill w Ray. I regret that I had not seen Ray in years, but my memories of him are universally positive; he was always friendly, warm, engaging, an avid boater, fisherman, and outdoor enthusiast. A true gentleman, always pleasant, and a pleasure to be with.
One of the true Good Guys.
My condolences to all of Rays extended family.
Until we meet again my friend!

Jeri,
We first met you all at your house with Ed and Amy and are you sometime neighbors on Sunset. We are so so sorry for your loss, but oh, what you gained. I know God will watch over your family and help you continue the legacy you shared. I will miss hearing him yell at me from the truck on my early morning walks with my pup when we are over at the cottage. I know how much Amy and Ed love you guys and we felt very happy to have some time to get to know you a bit. Our prayers will be guided this week to you and your beautiful family. We are in Chicago for the rest of the summer, but our hearts will be with you and our dear friends as you gather to celebrate this remarkable man.

Best,
Kathi Grau and Bruce LeBaron

While I have not seen Ray in quite a while, I have very fond memories of seeing and speaking to him often when our children attended Northside Christian School. Ray was always upbeat and fun to talk to and it was always obvious that he was truly a man who loved life. There was never any question that his family was absolutely his highest priority! I am saddened to hear of Ray's untimely passing, and I pray for his family and for their peace and comfort. May God Almighty comfort each of you and lift you up as you confront the loss of such a wonderful man. God speed, Ray...you will certainly be missed!

I met Ray almost twenty years ago. We served together on three Boards. He and I could not be more different in terms of politics, religion and views of the world. But we became great friends with a bond of love of family, hard work and to be the renegade "pains in the butt" on every Board we served. He fully threw 110%himself into every thing he did. I will miss him but remember him, forever.
